Senior Counsel – Claims and Litigation

We are seeking a legal professional with significant expertise in insurance coverage disputes to enhance our dynamic Claims and Litigation team. This group is instrumental in delivering legal guidance on both first and third-party coverage issues across various property, casualty, and specialty insurance sectors, thereby strengthening AXA Group's in-house claims capabilities.

As a Senior Counsel – Claims and Litigation, your role will encompass a wide array of insurance law advisory services for claims handlers, addressing both contentious and non-contentious issues across multiple jurisdictions. You will engage in both pre-litigation and litigated claims, collaborating closely with the claims handling team to manage coverage disputes effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

· Formulating detailed and high-quality coverage assessments, litigation strategies, and settlement approaches, considering the unique aspects of each case and its broader implications on the claims portfolio and overall business operations.

· Providing comprehensive legal advice to the complex, multi-jurisdictional Claims organization of AXA Group, including matters related to regulatory compliance and vendor contracts.

· Effectively communicating with key stakeholders, particularly claims handlers and senior management, both in writing and in person.

· Contributing to the enhancement of litigation management systems and processes in partnership with other internal legal units.

· Overseeing the selection and management of qualified outside counsel and litigation vendors, ensuring effective collaboration and strategic direction on case management.

· Acting as a subject matter expert, offering timely legal advice and training to internal stakeholders across our global insurance platform.

· Reporting significant case developments and litigation trends to senior management, maintaining regular communication with internal clients regarding case strategies.

· Providing hands-on management for high-profile cases while overseeing external counsel across a diverse range of claims-related litigation and arbitration matters.

· Addressing individual and portfolio issues, including jurisdictional considerations and policy terms, with a strategic perspective on exposure and legal opportunities.

You will collaborate closely with teams across the UK, US, and Asia-Pacific regions, engaging regularly with Underwriting Legal and Policy Wordings teams to enhance operational feedback loops.

Required Qualifications:

· Proven experience in international coverage, including litigation, arbitration, and mediation, acquired at a prestigious law firm.

· Strong academic credentials and qualification as a solicitor or barrister in the UK.

· Ability to navigate the complexities of claims and apply that knowledge to advance the technical and strategic objectives of the global claims organization.

· Competence in drafting and amending policy wordings from a legal standpoint.

· Exceptional research and analytical skills, capable of delivering precise and targeted insights in a fast-paced environment.

· Strategic mindset with the ability to innovate and lead discussions with subject matter experts.

· Leadership capabilities to coach and guide team members, ensuring accountability for results in a complex organizational structure.

· Proficient drafting skills for both internal documentation and external communications.

· Experience in overseeing e-discovery processes as needed.

· Ability to work independently, particularly with internal claims handlers based outside the UK.

· Innovative thinker with the capacity to manage complex financial data and scenarios.

· Excellent communication and negotiation skills, able to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

· Strong commitment to achieving outstanding results and maintaining high standards of performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Proficiency in an additional European language is advantageous but not essential.

· Experience working in-house with a specialty (re)insurer and managing litigation in various jurisdictions is preferred.
