The Emergency Department team at University Hospitals Sussex is seeking a Band 3 Lead Emergency Nursing Assistant who is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care and is eager to make a significant impact on the lives of patients and their families during critical times.

Our facility features a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) and is actively enhancing care pathways to ensure timely and appropriate treatment for our patients.

We are in search of compassionate, proactive, and dynamic nursing professionals with outstanding communication and organizational abilities, who can inspire and support their colleagues while taking initiative in their responsibilities.

Our department handles a diverse range of emergency cases, including Trauma, Medical/Surgical, Gynaecology, Maternity, and Paediatrics, and we are proud to offer a dedicated Stroke Service. Our well-established Emergency Nurse Practitioner Team collaborates closely with staff to foster and enhance their expertise in managing minor injuries and treatments.

Main Responsibilities

Assist patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) while utilizing appropriate aids and equipment to promote self-care. Responsibilities include:

  • Personal hygiene assistance
  • Oral hygiene support
  • Managing elimination needs (including bedpans and commodes)
  • Manual handling and patient positioning
  • Facilitating transfers and mobilization
  • Monitoring nutritional and fluid intake
  • Ensuring a safe environment, including falls prevention

All care activities are guided by protocol-driven patient assessments. Provide direct supervision and support to patients, including those with mental health conditions. Educate patients by explaining procedures and treatments, and act as a chaperone during clinical examinations, offering reassurance and monitoring during therapies as needed. Collect patient specimens and prepare them for diagnostic testing, ensuring proper handling and disposal of healthcare waste.

Detailed Job Description and Key Responsibilities

Work within the Emergency Department to provide timely assessment, care, and treatment to patients, ensuring the highest standards of care based on best practices.

  • Manage patient property, including clothing and valuables.
  • Ensure accurate patient documentation, including wristbands and blood labels.
  • Maintain up-to-date patient information, including contact details.

Facilitate the onboarding process for junior staff by assisting with induction documentation and competency assessments.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • NVQ Level 3 qualification
  • Experience in an Emergency Department setting

Desirable Criteria

  • Skills in minor injury management (e.g., plastering, wound care)
  • Venepuncture and cannulation proficiency
  • ECG competency
  • Current STAM certification
