Position Overview

This is a comprehensive training contract designed to last up to 24 months. Successful completion of the Trainee Investigator Program is essential for continued permanent employment and transition into a permanent Investigator role. Opportunities are available across various office locations.

Role Responsibilities

As a Trainee Investigator, you will become part of a dynamic and inclusive Investigations team, engaging in a variety of investigations. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of the police complaints system in England and Wales.

You will participate in the Professionalising Investigations Programme Level 1 (PIP1), aimed at developing your investigative skills and knowledge while working towards a qualification. The PIP1 program encompasses both formal and practical learning experiences, providing support to create a portfolio of evidence that will equip you with the necessary skills to become a qualified investigator.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting high-quality, independent investigations in line with established guidelines.
  • Collecting and analyzing evidence, including report writing.
  • Conducting interviews with witnesses and subjects.
  • Visiting incident scenes to assist in evidence preservation and recovery.
  • Participating in postmortem examinations.
  • Engaging in criminal, misconduct, and inquest proceedings.
  • Effectively communicating with complainants, bereaved families, and various stakeholders.
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team, including legal professionals and press officers.
  • Taking charge of your personal development and maintaining an accreditation portfolio.
  • Shadowing experienced investigators and being prepared for unsociable hours.

Upon completing the PIP1 program, you will be expected to engage in a revalidation program to ensure your skills and knowledge remain current.

Security Clearance

This role requires baseline security clearance.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications:

  • A valid driving license in England & Wales.

Required Experience:

  • Ability to analyze complex information and draw evidence-based conclusions.
  • Experience working with diverse populations through community engagement.
  • Proven teamwork capabilities.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in report writing.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to document clear, rational decisions.
  • Experience in engaging with a variety of stakeholders and a commitment to equality and diversity.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Adaptability in a changing work environment.
