Position Overview

This role involves a comprehensive training program lasting up to 24 months, with the potential for ongoing employment contingent upon successful completion of the Trainee Investigator Program and subsequent appointment to a permanent Investigator position. Opportunities are available across various office locations.

Role Responsibilities

As a Trainee Investigator, you will become part of a vibrant and inclusive Investigations team, engaging in a variety of investigations at both local and national levels. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of the police complaints system in England and Wales.

Your development will be supported through the Professionalising Investigations Programme Level 1 (PIP1), designed to cultivate your investigative skills and knowledge while working towards a formal qualification. The PIP1 program includes both structured learning and practical, on-the-job training, enabling you to build a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your competencies as a PIP1 investigator.

Key Duties Include:

  • Collecting and analyzing evidence, including report writing.
  • Conducting interviews with witnesses and subjects.
  • Visiting incident scenes to assist in evidence preservation and recovery.
  • Participating in postmortem examinations.
  • Engaging in criminal, misconduct, and inquest proceedings.
  • Communicating effectively with complainants and stakeholders.
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Taking ownership of personal development and maintaining an accreditation portfolio.
  • Shadowing experienced investigators and being prepared for on-call duties.

Upon completion of the PIP1 program, ongoing participation in the revalidation process will be required to ensure your skills remain current and aligned with PIP standards.

Security Clearance: Baseline Standard

This role requires the completion of the Trainee Investigator training program, which encompasses both formal and practical training, equipping you with the necessary skills and knowledge for the role.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A valid driving license in England & Wales.
  • Experience in analyzing complex information and developing evidence-based conclusions.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in team settings.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including advanced report writing capabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equality and diversity.
