About the Institution

Situated in Wigan, our newly established school provides a secure and encouraging atmosphere for learners aged 5 to 16 years.

With considerable investment and a wealth of new resources, the successful candidate will have the chance to influence and develop the school to foster a nurturing environment that encourages self-discipline, engagement, and inspires learning. Our goal is to deliver a varied and suitable education for each student that promotes ambition and success.

As part of the Polaris Community, we have been dedicated to enhancing the lives of young people for over three decades. Within this community, we operate six SEN Schools across the UK that collaborate to offer each student a personalized, diverse, and appropriate education in a safe and supportive setting that encourages engagement, inspires learning, and fosters achievement. We take pride in the fact that 100% of our inspected services have been rated as Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and security of school facilities, including the building and grounds;
  • Performing cleaning, maintenance tasks, routine upkeep, and minor repairs;
  • Overseeing school cleaning personnel;
  • Advocating for health and safety standards throughout the school;
  • Facilitating the movement of furniture and equipment within the school;
  • Maintaining the overall condition of school premises, furniture, and fixtures, and reporting any concerns to the Head Teacher;
  • Executing minor repairs and DIY tasks;
  • Coordinating larger repairs and obtaining estimates from contractors;
  • Conducting daily cleaning and miscellaneous tasks, such as litter collection and waste disposal;
  • Responding to emergency cleaning needs, including gritting and spill management;
  • Organizing an annual deep clean of classrooms, staff areas, kitchens, dining spaces, and other frequently used areas;
  • Managing the upkeep of cleaning equipment and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels;
  • Maintaining the security of the school premises as the primary key holder;
  • Locking and unlocking the premises as necessary, including outside of regular hours;
  • Verifying that all windows, doors, and gates are secured at the end of the school day, and that lights and appliances are turned off;
  • Setting security alarm systems, reporting potential security issues, and responding to alarms or call-outs as per established protocols;
  • Conducting regular inspections of CCTV and alarm systems, locks, fire safety equipment, security gates, and perimeter fencing, ensuring timely repairs;
  • Advising the Head Teacher on all matters related to school security and safety, ensuring a safe working and learning environment in compliance with relevant regulations;
  • Performing and documenting regular health and safety assessments, including checks on legionella risk, play equipment, safety gear, and any hazards on school grounds, reporting issues to the Head Teacher;
  • Ensuring safe access to the school during adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools;
  • Prior experience in a caretaking role within an educational setting;
  • Experience in building maintenance;
  • Familiarity with security systems, including alarms;
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations;
  • Basic DIY capabilities;
  • Effective interpersonal skills for liaising with contractors and visitors;
  • Proficient literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Ability to work in an environment with SEMH children;
  • Willingness to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check, with costs covered by the employer;
  • Possession of a UK Driving License and access to transportation.

The selected candidate will be required to complete an enhanced DBS Check, with the associated costs covered by Polaris.
