About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Graduate Research Computing Service Support / Software Engineer to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing support to scientific users of the JASMIN high-performance data analysis facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to users of the JASMIN facility, including troubleshooting and resolving issues related to compute, storage, and cloud services.
  • Design, review, and edit technical documentation and training materials to ensure that users have the necessary information to effectively use the JASMIN facility.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of software components of the services that we operate, applying robust and up-to-date software engineering practices.
  • Work closely with colleagues in STFC's Scientific Computing Department to operate and monitor key services such as user access control, cloud tenancies, batch computing on an HPC cluster, and large-scale storage.
Requirements
  • Achieved, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at the time of starting employment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and interest in, the work of the JASMIN team, and a desire to make a positive contribution.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Highly self-motivated.
  • Able to manage your time effectively between multiple tasks.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a small team.
  • Effective communication skills.
Desirable Skills
  • Aptitude for one or more of: scientific / high-performance computing environments based on Linux, coding, preferably in Python and bash shell environments, robust software development & deployment practices, communicating and helping others in a technical capacity.
