About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled nurse to lead our team as a Senior Nurse Leader on the Renal Ward 7A at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality care to patients with renal conditions and to lead a motivated and experienced team of nurses.

Main Responsibilities
  • Care Coordination and Leadership
    • Coordinate patient care during your shift, ensuring seamless transitions and supporting junior colleagues.
    • Act as a role model, demonstrating excellent leadership skills and promoting a positive work environment.
  • Quality and Safety
    • Continuously monitor and ensure quality and safety for our patients, actively involved in answering concerns and completing investigation reports.
  • Clinical Leadership
    • Lead a motivated and experienced team of nurses, supporting evidence-based care and facilitating staff learning and development.
    • Supervise junior staff and nursing students, providing guidance and mentorship.
  • Communication and Teamwork
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams, especially where patient ability to do so is compromised.
    • Disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately.
  • Medication and Treatment Administration
    • Administer medication and treatment within established guidelines and protocols.
  • Education and Development
    • Participate in mentorship and educational programs for students and other members of the team.
  • Policy and Procedure
    • Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct.
  • Recruitment and Retention
    • Support the Senior Sister/Matron in recruitment, retention, and performance-related issues.
  • Budgetary Control and Resource Management
    • Support the Senior Sister/Matron in the management of budgetary control and resource management.
  • Clinical Governance and Risk Management
    • Take the lead with Clinical Governance and risk management in your designated area.
  • Technology and Record-Keeping
    • Input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer-based systems and maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.
  • Patient and Public Involvement
    • Respond to and support junior staff members with Patient Public Involvement, ensuring it is integrated into service delivery.
  • Clinical Leadership and Motivation
    • Provide clinical leadership that inspires and motivates others.
  • Team Collaboration and Education
    • Work with the Matron/ward management team to ensure that appropriate staff working in the ward environment have the knowledge and skills to provide expert care to the acutely ill patient.
  • Education and Training
    • Be actively involved in the setting up and maintaining of educational programs that ensure advanced knowledge and skills amongst the nursing team.

Person Specification
  • Qualifications
    • Registered Nurse (Adult) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
    • Leadership and Management.
    • Teaching and Assessing.
    • Post-registration course, e.g. Renal, Elderly Care.
    • Health and Safety, e.g. IOSHH.
  • Experience
    • Demonstrate strong leadership for patient safety.
    • Demonstrate evidence of change management.
    • Personnel management - appraisal, sickness management, mentoring, recruitment.
    • Care of the acutely unwell patient.
  • Desirable
    • Recognised management course or equivalent level of skill gained through experience.
    • Appropriate experience as a Band 5 in Renal setting or alternative acute setting.
    • Band 6 in another acute clinical setting.
  • Knowledge/Skills
    • Enhanced IT skills.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of budgetary management.
    • Management course, e.g. iManage/ILM Level 3.
    • Acute ward experience with associated nursing skills, e.g. catheterisation, NG tube insertion.
