Position Overview

The Trainee Laboratory Technician role at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust presents a remarkable opportunity to acquire new competencies and integrate into the Pathology Services team.

This training program is ideal for individuals eager to learn and cultivate skills aimed at launching a career in Pathology while pursuing a Level 3 Advanced Laboratory Technician apprenticeship.

Throughout this training experience, you will:

  • Receive guidance from a workplace mentor
  • Engage in a minimum of 6 hours per week of 'off-the-job training' to enhance your learning
  • Maintain regular communication with the Training Provider and the Apprenticeships and Careers Team
  • Access a virtual learning platform
  • Participate in workshops (both in-person and virtual) to discuss and share insights

Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibility will be to assist the Biomedical Scientist team in the daily operations of the Histology service.

This apprenticeship is open to candidates aged 18 and above due to the nature of the work environment.

The selected candidate will undergo an induction and receive training tailored to their assigned tasks, followed by enrollment in the Advanced (Level 3) Laboratory Technician Standard Apprenticeship.

The Trainee is expected to complete all apprenticeship components within an 18-month period, which includes:

  • Competency Evaluation Log
  • Behaviours Log
  • Functional Skills (Level 2): Maths and English if necessary
  • Health and Safety and Employee rights and responsibilities
  • End Point Assessment

Job Duties

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be required to attend all essential components of the Apprenticeship Framework, including:

  • Corporate induction
  • Mandatory training specific to the Trust
  • Department-based vocational assessments
  • Progress review meetings

Key Result Areas

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Receiving specimens and entering data into the laboratory information system
  • Preparing specimens for processing
  • Assisting in specimen processing
  • Routine slide preparation
  • Managing specimen, slide, and block storage and retrieval
  • Disposing of specimens appropriately
  • Performing basic equipment maintenance
  • Maintaining adequate levels of consumables, including solution preparation
  • Adhering to established standard operating procedures
  • Complying with health and safety regulations relevant to the laboratory
  • Participating in training and updates as required
  • Familiarizing yourself with Trust Policies and Procedures and adhering to them consistently
  • Engaging in formal performance reviews in accordance with Trust policy
  • Reporting any incidents or accidents immediately, following Trust procedures
  • Carrying out any other relevant duties as requested by your line manager.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE Grade C/4 in English and Maths, or equivalent (Functional Skills Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy)
  • A levels in Science-based subjects or equivalent Level 3 qualification

  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
