Position Overview

This is a temporary role designed to fulfill the service requirements.

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable nurse with a background in respiratory health. The successful candidate will collaborate with primary care providers to enhance asthma management. This position is structured as a fixed-term engagement.

The individual in this role will assist practice nurses in a tailored manner suited to each specific practice. In the realm of secondary care, they will contribute to the severe asthma service.

Support for primary care will be guided by the All Wales guidelines.

The role will also involve participation in the All Wales asthma multidisciplinary team, where the nurse may present cases and initiate biologic treatments for eligible patients.

Patients identified in primary care as potential candidates for biologic therapy will be discussed with the severe asthma lead, and necessary assessments will be conducted prior to clinic reviews.

Throughout the interface, the nurse will promote advancements in respiratory care, ensuring effective connections between primary, community, and secondary care services to facilitate the asthma patient’s journey through their treatment pathway.

Key Responsibilities

Hywel Dda University Health Board is in search of an innovative and passionate nurse to join the Interface Asthma Nursing Team. The Interface Asthma Nurse Specialist will engage with primary care and connect with the Difficult Asthma Clinic.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Champion and enhance the integration of asthma care across primary and secondary care settings, utilizing evidence-based and patient-centered approaches to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of asthma patients, interpret relevant investigations, and develop individualized care plans.
  • Review asthma patient registers to ensure accurate diagnoses.
  • Facilitate appropriate follow-up and referrals to other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform a variety of diagnostic respiratory assessments, including peak flow measurements, FENO testing, spirometry, and airway reversibility studies.
  • Operate at an advanced level, exercising independent clinical judgment, advanced clinical skills, and prescribing rights as permitted by local and national regulations.

Welsh language proficiency is desirable for this position; applications from both English and Welsh speakers are encouraged.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Registered Nurse with Part 1 NMC registration.
  • Possession of a degree or equivalent qualification or relevant experience.
  • Completion of an advanced respiratory course at the Master’s level.
  • Non-medical prescriber certification.
  • Expertise in respiratory care, particularly in asthma management.

Desirable:

  • ARTP accredited Spirometry certification.
  • Advanced Inhaler Technique training.
  • Teaching qualifications.
  • Published research.
  • Experience in change management.
  • Good Clinical Practice certification for research.

Experience:

Essential:

  • Relevant post-registration experience, including in respiratory care.
  • Experience with FENO testing as part of patient assessments.

Desirable:

  • Experience in both primary and secondary care settings.
  • Experience in conducting audits, report writing, and presenting to health and social care professionals.
