About the Role

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a world-leading research organization that drives innovation and growth through measurement science. We are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to join our Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group in Teddington.

NPL has a suite of dedicated facilities, including laboratory tanks, an acoustics pressure vessel, and an open-water site. As a Senior Scientist, you will play a key role in delivering NPL's scientific work, contributing to research and development projects that require a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead cutting-edge research, identifying opportunities for commercialization
  • Develop improved acoustic modeling techniques to augment measurements made using NPL's specialized laboratory facilities
  • Develop improved data analysis techniques for experimental data derived from ocean acoustic measurements
  • Contribute to collaborative research projects with NPL's partners, both nationally and internationally
  • Lead the technical work of NPL projects, including preparation of project proposals and supervision of junior staff
  • Contribute to scientific output through journal publications and conferences, and represent the UK on technical standards committees
  • Represent NPL to promote our work and raise our profile
  • Craft winning bids, in line with NPL's growth strategy
  • Work inclusively and collaboratively to develop partnership opportunities
  • Present NPL's work at conferences and in scientific papers
About You

We are looking for a Senior Scientist with a proven track record in a similar role, well-established in the field with a significant scientific profile. You will have a graduate or post-graduate qualification in Physics or Acoustics or a related discipline, and be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in technical reports and proposals.

You will have experience in supporting and developing junior members of the team, and an in-depth understanding of the underlying physical principles, with the ability to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions. You will also have experience in developing software for finite element modeling, acoustic propagation, and data analysis, and be able to interact and network with collaborators and future customers.
