National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a world-leading research organization that plays a critical role in advancing the UK's prosperity and quality of life. We are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to join our Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group in a key leadership position.
Key Responsibilities- Lead cutting-edge research in ocean acoustics and marine acoustic technology, identifying opportunities for commercialization and innovation.
- Develop and implement advanced acoustic modeling techniques to enhance measurements made using NPL's specialized laboratory facilities.
- Design and implement improved data analysis techniques for experimental data derived from ocean acoustic measurements.
- Contribute to collaborative research projects with NPL's partners, both nationally and internationally.
- Lead the technical work of NPL projects, including proposal development and supervision of junior staff.
- Contribute to scientific output through journal publications and conferences, and represent the UK on technical standards committees.
- Represent NPL to promote our work and raise our profile in the scientific community.
- Craft winning bids and proposals in line with NPL's growth strategy.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with industry, academia, and government organizations.
- Present NPL's work at conferences and in scientific papers.
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Scientist with a strong background in ocean acoustics and marine acoustic technology. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading research teams and developing innovative solutions to complex problems.
Requirements
- Proven experience in a similar Scientist role, with a strong scientific profile and a track record of innovation.
- Demonstrable scientific understanding of ocean acoustics and marine acoustic technology.
- Graduate or post-graduate qualification in Physics or Acoustics or a related discipline.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and partners.
- Experience in supporting and developing junior members of the team.
- In-depth understanding of the underlying physical principles, and the ability to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions.
- Experience in developing software for finite element modeling, acoustic propagation, and data analysis.
- Ability to work to deadlines within a team and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
- Awareness of the industry and business landscape, with the ability to identify opportunities for growth and innovation.
