The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit stands as the foremost center for weaning and home mechanical ventilation in the UK, specializing in the management and long-term care of patients with chronic respiratory diseases, including COPD and neuromuscular disorders. We also provide specialized nurse-led clinics and a home ventilation service to assess and support patients with chronic respiratory conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Our state-of-the-art 14-bed facility delivers high-quality specialized respiratory care to complex level 2 and level 3 patients, including:

  • Management of tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation
  • Weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation
  • Administration of acute and chronic non-invasive ventilation
  • High flow oxygen therapy

Job Duties

  • Deliver clinical practice within assigned areas, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based nursing assessments, care planning, implementation, interventions, and evaluations for patients from admission to discharge.
  • Apply knowledge across various work procedures and practices, supported by theoretical understanding and practical experience.
  • Ensure patients receive high-quality clinical care and a positive patient experience, respecting their customs, beliefs, and values.
  • Identify and mitigate situations that may adversely affect the health and well-being of individuals.
  • Recognize the importance of observations made and utilize them to develop and initiate nursing assessments and care plans.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing needs.
  • Ensure all patients have a safe and appropriate discharge plan tailored to their needs.
  • Perform nursing procedures and treatments, maintaining the highest standards of care.
  • Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team to determine treatments and prioritize nursing care.
  • Gather detailed patient histories by assessing their health and well-being, ensuring accurate and legible documentation.
  • Conduct prescribed physical assessments, including vital signs, and report any abnormalities as necessary.
  • Administer prescribed medications accurately, including blood transfusions.
  • Maintain accountability for practice in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct, seeking opportunities for professional development.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure compliance with local unit and departmental policies.
  • Adopt a patient-centered approach to care.
  • Ensure all staff are aware of fire safety, manual handling, and other relevant policies.
  • Handle complex, sensitive, or contentious information related to patients, care, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patient care.
  • Liaise with patients and relatives, providing reports and coordinating with medical staff and other care team members.
  • Participate in handover reports, taking on leadership or coordination roles as needed.
