Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Data Protection and Compliance Specialist to join our team at Black Pen Recruitment. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for managing our company's data protection and privacy legal matters across the EU and 20 African jurisdictions.

About the Role:

  • Manage data protection and privacy legal matters: You will be responsible for ensuring our company's compliance with GDPR and data protection regulations across various jurisdictions.
  • Serve as Data Protection Officer: You will serve as the Group's named Data Protection Officer, working closely with the Information Security team to bring the Group into compliance with GDPR.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams: You will work closely with the Product and Marketing teams to ensure GDPR and African jurisdiction data protection and privacy compliance.
  • Provide expert advice: You will advise relevant functions on all matters relating to data protection and privacy.
  • Develop and maintain data protection matrices: You will own data protection and privacy matrices, ensuring they are up-to-date and compliant with regulations.
  • Manage data collector registrations: You will acquire and maintain various data collector registrations.
  • Advise on data protection provisions: You will advise on data protection and privacy provisions in various contracts.

Requirements:

  • Law degree: You must have a law degree from an accredited top-tier university.
  • Admitted to practice law: You must be admitted to practice law in the UK, EU, and/or a major African jurisdiction (e.g., South Africa or Nigeria).
  • Legal experience: You must have at least 3 years of legal experience focusing on GDPR matters, either as an associate with a leading international or Pan-African law firm and/or as an in-house attorney.
  • Excellent understanding of GDPR: You must have an excellent understanding of GDPR with exposure to data protection and privacy laws and regulations across Africa.
  • Familiarity with Data Protection Officer role: You must be familiar with fulfilling the role of Data Protection Officer.
  • Excellent communication skills: You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Practical and commercial approach: You must have a practical and commercial approach with an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Fluency in French: Fluency in French is a plus (Arabic is a further plus).
