Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a full-time Band 8a Clinical Psychologist / Specialist Practitioner Psychologist to become part of a dynamic and expanding Psychological Services Department within a prominent acute hospital Trust. Our department is composed of clinical psychologists, practitioner psychologists, psychotherapists, and counselors who cater to various specialties, including Neuropsychology, Spinal, Pain Management, Burns, Oncology, and Palliative Care Services. We prioritize and foster professional development, supervision, and research related to our services. Our department also hosts trainees from several local Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology, and Counseling Psychology programs, maintaining strong academic partnerships with local training institutions.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will contribute to the Medicine Specialty within our Psychological Services Department. This role involves providing support to a diverse patient population accessing services across multiple hospital sites.

The ideal candidate should possess enthusiasm, high motivation, and resourcefulness, along with robust skills in delivering psychological interventions and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Responsibilities include conducting specialized psychological assessments and treatments for patients with intricate medical conditions (such as cardiology, dermatology, diabetes and endocrinology, and gastroenterology), as well as offering guidance and consultation to professional colleagues. The role also entails providing clinical supervision to junior staff (assistants, trainee psychologists, Band 7 clinicians) and participating in audit, research initiatives, and service enhancement.

Clinical and professional supervision will be provided by the Consultant Psychologist in the specialty. The successful candidate will join a developing service that offers excellent opportunities for professional support and career advancement. We frequently accept doctoral trainees from local programs and have established strong academic ties with a variety of universities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Conducting highly specialized psychological assessments utilizing various measures (interviews, standardized questionnaires, rating scales, observations) for patients with complex medical and psychological histories to formulate their needs.
  • Making informed evaluations and decisions regarding treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models alongside complex historical and developmental factors influencing the individual, family, or group.
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring specialized psychological interventions based on the assessment of treatment options while considering the identified complexities.
  • Consulting and providing expert psychological guidance to patients' families and allied health professionals involved in patient care.
  • Conducting risk assessments and management for relevant patients, offering both general and specialized advice on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or equivalent for those trained prior to 2000) accredited by the BPS.
  • HCPC registration (or within six months of achieving HCPC registration) as a Clinical Psychologist with Chartered Status.
  • Experience working with patients with medical conditions and conducting specialized assessments and interventions across various care settings.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, families, and professional colleagues.
  • Ability to work autonomously and flexibly within a multidisciplinary context in an acute healthcare environment.
