Position Overview

The surgical divisions are renowned for their comprehensive training programs, emphasizing hands-on experience within a bustling, large District General Hospital. The successful candidates will join one of three specialized teams (two focused on colorectal surgery and one on upper gastrointestinal surgery), providing on-call support in accordance with EWTD regulations, on a rolling rota of 1 in 11, while also managing the care of in-patients. Additionally, there is a secondary on-call rota for the surgical admissions unit during business hours, operating on a 1 in 12 basis. Ample opportunities for practical surgical training in the operating room are available. Each surgical team comprises a consultant, a registrar, a core trainee/clinical fellow/F2, and an F1. Candidates will have the chance to take study leave to pursue examinations and relevant courses as needed.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be integrated into one of three surgical teams: GI, Vascular, or Breast. Collaborating with colleagues, they will oversee the daily management of in-patients, fulfill the responsibilities of the on-call general surgical registrar, and participate in theatre and outpatient services. Upon appointment, the candidate will join a cohort of 10 general surgical registrars, all of whom share on-call duties with the assistance of an F1 and an F2.

- The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the education and training of junior staff and medical students associated with the general surgery department.

Candidates are encouraged to engage in research initiatives and will participate in pertinent Clinical Audit projects. Access to computers and internet facilities is provided within the department.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • MBBS (or equivalent qualification)
  • Registration with the GMC and a valid license to practice
  • Successful completion of MRCS or an equivalent qualification
  • Evidence of progressive training

Clinical Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Completion of F1 and F2 years (or equivalent outside the UK)
  • Completion of CT/ST1/2 in General Surgery
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • A minimum of 24 months of surgical experience, including at least 6 months in General Surgery

Knowledge and Skills

Clinical Skills

  • Proficient in history taking and examination skills, including basic life support and resuscitation
