Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Communication Specialist to enhance the quality of life for older adults experiencing communication challenges and swallowing difficulties. This role involves working closely with individuals diagnosed with dementia, both in community settings and inpatient facilities. You will receive comprehensive support to achieve your RCSLT competencies and advance your skills in dysphagia management.

In this position, you will collaborate with a Band 7 Clinical Lead who specializes in dysphagia care for older populations, alongside Band 6 specialists. You will be part of our Older Persons Community Therapy Service, which offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and professional growth.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to upholding the dignity and enhancing the quality of life for older individuals. Organizational skills and a foundational understanding of cognitive impairments and dementia are essential. Regular supervision and encouragement for professional development will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct assessments, develop, and implement tailored Speech and Language Therapy interventions.

- Offer professional guidance regarding the management and care of clients with communication and/or feeding difficulties.

- Collaborate on joint assessments with fellow Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals within the dementia specialty.

- Effectively communicate assessment findings to service users, caregivers, families, and the multidisciplinary team.

- Engage closely with service users, caregivers, and families to facilitate shared decision-making regarding patient management.

- Demonstrate empathy and effective communication, particularly in situations where understanding may be compromised.

- Foster motivation among service users and caregivers to participate actively in the therapeutic process.

- Manage a diverse caseload of clients with dementia, addressing a wide range of needs.

- Utilize clinical knowledge to make informed decisions regarding case management.

- Advocate for a client-centered approach that respects the preferences and involvement of service users in their care.
