Position Overview

The Broadcast Technical Specialist will be stationed at the BBC's Inverness office, collaborating within a dedicated team of Senior Technical Operators and Technical Operators. This role is overseen by a Lead Technical Operator, also located in Inverness. The Specialist will engage in various tasks to collect, process, and transmit content across BBC ALBA and Radio nan Gaidheal, working closely with editorial teams to deliver high-quality news content that meets audience expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct necessary planning to ensure all required facilities and arrangements are prepared in radio studios, TV galleries, and on the studio floor, including external locations when necessary.
  • Coordinate the assembly of all materials essential for programming.
  • Address issues that arise during live broadcasts, prioritizing editorial needs and resource availability.
  • Determine the most suitable equipment for the desired editorial style.
  • Provide guidance on story treatments concerning production values and technical feasibility.
  • Direct live broadcasts, whether on location or in the studio, considering time constraints, lighting needs, and filming techniques.
  • Supervise and facilitate the editing of materials as required.
  • Utilize broadcast camera equipment to gather content effectively.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience as a technical operator in a live broadcast setting across various production genres.
  • Familiarity with baseband and file-based routing and ingest systems.
  • Strong technical understanding of digital media standards, codecs, and production workflows.
  • Knowledge of broadcast systems, infrastructure, and studio as well as outside broadcast facilities.
  • Comprehension of television lighting and associated equipment and systems.
  • Appreciation for color and light in television production, with skills in operating equipment to manage these elements effectively.
  • Good grasp of local and inter-regional circuit routing and control systems.
  • Awareness of safe working practices in studio and outside broadcast environments.
