Position Overview
The Broadcast Technical Specialist will be based in the BBC Inverness office and will collaborate with a team of approximately ten Senior Technical Operators and Technical Operators. The team is overseen by a Lead Technical Operator located in Inverness. The Specialist will undertake various responsibilities to gather, process, and broadcast content across multiple platforms, working closely with editorial teams to deliver high-quality news content that meets audience expectations. This role includes a combination of office-based tasks, such as producing live TV and radio content, as well as fieldwork to gather content for diverse platforms. Maintaining the highest technical standards is essential, and skills will be continuously developed to adapt to the evolving media landscape. The Specialist will be expected to prioritize digital platforms and collaborate with editorial teams to drive growth.
Main Responsibilities
- Plan and ensure all necessary facilities and arrangements are in place for radio studios, TV galleries, and studio floors.
- Coordinate the assembly of all materials required for programming.
- Address issues encountered during live transmissions, considering editorial priorities and resource availability.
- Determine the most suitable equipment for the desired editorial style.
- Provide guidance on story treatments regarding production values and technical feasibility.
- Direct live broadcasts, transmissions, or recordings, whether on location or in the studio, while considering time constraints and lighting requirements.
- Supervise and assist in the editing of materials as necessary.
- Utilize broadcast camera equipment to gather content.
Are You the Right Fit?
- Experience as a technical operator in a live broadcast environment across various production genres.
- Familiarity with baseband and file-based routing and ingest systems.
- Strong technical knowledge of digital media standards, codecs, and production workflows.
- Understanding of broadcast systems, infrastructure, and studio/OB facilities.
- Knowledge of television lighting and related equipment and systems.
- Appreciation of color and light in television production, with skills in operating equipment to meet artistic and editorial needs.
- Good understanding of local and inter-regional circuit routing and control systems.
- Knowledge of safe working practices in studio and OB environments.
