Position Overview

We are seeking applications for a 12-month position as an Ophthalmology Clinical Research Associate within a leading healthcare institution. The primary objective of this role is to support various clinical trials and associated research initiatives while exploring new avenues in clinical investigation. The position includes opportunities for clinical engagement in medical and surgical retina, with potential exposure to orbital and oculoplastic research.

The role is designed to commence at the earliest opportunity. There is no on-call requirement associated with this position.

Job Duties

The primary focus of this role is to assist in clinical trials, engage in research projects, and acquire clinical experience in retinal care. It is anticipated that candidates will have opportunities to present findings and contribute to publications.

There is no on-call obligation for this position. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification is a prerequisite.

Provisional Schedule

The schedule may include participation in medical retina clinics, uveitis, and potentially vitreoretinal clinics, as well as cataract surgery and vitreoretinal theatre, contingent upon individual interests and experience.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC registration at the time of application.
  • GCP Training.

Desirable

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Completion of Part 2 FRCOphth.
  • Prior experience within the NHS.

Clinical Expertise and Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience in clinical ophthalmology.
  • Strong history-taking and examination skills.
  • Able to develop a working diagnosis.
  • Competent in ordering relevant investigations.
  • Proficient in image interpretation pertinent to practice.
  • Recognizes when to seek guidance from senior colleagues.

Desirable

  • Completion of UK-based run-through training with satisfactory ARCP outcomes.
  • Independent cataract surgeon.
  • Prior experience in medical retina work, including laser and intraocular injections.
  • Able to interpret retinal imaging.

Maintaining Clinical Competence

Essential

  • Documented evidence of satisfactory training and workplace assessments.

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Experience in teaching undergraduate medical students and Foundation Doctors.

Clinical Governance, Audit, and Research

Essential

  • Experience in conducting audit projects.
  • Experience in research activities.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated audit outcomes.
  • Evidence of presentations and publications.
  • Experience in working on clinical trials.
