Job Purpose:

Brown & Brown Europe is seeking a seasoned Underwriting Director to lead our Property Underwriting division. As a key member of the senior leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing underwriting and pricing strategies across our personal and commercial lines property portfolios in the UK & Ireland.

You will provide strategic direction and oversight to ensure best practice is achieved through embedded technical standards and controls. Working closely with the trading and claims teams, you will monitor progress towards company business objectives set by the board. This will involve ensuring underwriting performance meets target loss ratios for all distribution channels while delivering our income budget.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement underwriting and pricing strategies to drive business growth and profitability.
  • Lead relationships with carrier partners, including monthly meetings and quarterly business reviews.
  • Collaborate with actuaries to monitor the development of open and closed underwriting years.
  • Oversight and sign-off of all products from a technical underwriting perspective.
  • Manage technical and pricing controls to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support the Governance team with internal and external audits and product governance.
  • Prepare and present Board and ExCo packs as required.
  • Adhere to all regulatory requirements, including the SMCR regime.
  • Sponsor and deliver technical underwriting training to ensure team knowledge and skills are up-to-date.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A proven track record in senior underwriting leadership within an MGA, insurer, or Lloyd's environment.
  • At least 10 years of UK property underwriting experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of personal and/or commercial lines underwriting (ideally both).
  • Experience of managing stakeholder relationships, including insurer partners and third-party suppliers.
  • ACII qualified.
Desirable Skills:

The following skills would be advantageous:

  • Previous experience in the MGA market.
  • Understanding of the non-standard home and real estate markets.
  • Experience of contract negotiations.
  • Creation and delivery of underwriting training.
  • Knowledge and experience of writing business in Southern Ireland.
  • European underwriting experience.
  • Data and analytics skills.
