Position Overview: The individual in this role will conduct preliminary evaluations of minors experiencing mental health emergencies, including situations involving self-harm, overdose, or acute psychological distress.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess children and adolescents presenting at the Emergency Department and medical wards, ensuring thorough psycho-social evaluations and risk assessments.
  • Develop discharge plans that include referrals to suitable services and connections to relevant community organizations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare colleagues to provide training, support, and guidance on mental health issues and self-harm management.
  • Deliver intensive home-based support for a duration of up to 8 weeks, focusing on crisis intervention.
  • Respond to urgent cases within specified timeframes, ensuring timely assistance for young individuals in distress.
  • Facilitate home support to prevent hospital admissions or reduce the duration of hospital stays by offering comprehensive post-discharge assistance.

Intervention Techniques: The role will involve providing evidence-based, short-term therapeutic interventions, including:

  • Distraction and relaxation strategies
  • Positive coping mechanisms
  • Risk management and safety planning
  • Psychoeducation for service users and their families
  • CBT-based approaches focused on anxiety management

This position is crucial in enhancing the mental health support system for young individuals in crisis.
