Position Overview

The primary objective of this role is to uphold the delivery of exceptional oncological services to patients within the healthcare trust while actively participating in the advancement of the oncology department.

The selected candidate will specialize in Gynaecological and breast cancers, with the opportunity to manage another cancer type of their preference. Collaboration with the breast oncology team is encouraged, including participation in multidisciplinary team meetings and specialized clinics. For those with a focus on clinical oncology, there may be opportunities to engage with colorectal cases, covering relevant clinics and radiotherapy services. As patient referrals for oncological treatment continue to rise, the appointee will be expected to enhance the multidisciplinary approach to patient management, promote clinical trial participation, and expand services to meet evolving patient needs.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Collaborate with colleagues across various healthcare facilities to deliver comprehensive cancer care for gynaecological and breast conditions.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary meetings to review pertinent histological data.
  • Provide clinical leadership in the management of Gynaecology and Breast Oncology.
  • Participate in the consultant-led inpatient service, ensuring quality care for oncological patients.
  • Contribute to ongoing research initiatives utilizing available clinical and laboratory resources.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Mentor and train junior medical staff, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Serve as a clinical and educational supervisor for locally employed doctors and trainees across various levels of experience.
  • Actively engage in departmental and trust-wide clinical governance and audit activities.

The appointed consultant will also be expected to contribute to service improvement initiatives, including:

  • Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
  • Cost Improvement Program (CIP)
  • Implementing evidence-based practices as necessary

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP Part 1 and Part 2
  • Full registration and a license to practice with the General Medical Council.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Postgraduate thesis awarded or pending
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview

Experience and Knowledge

Essential Experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Medical Oncology
  • Extensive experience in chemotherapy prescribing, including E-prescribing.
  • Experience in Acute Oncology
  • Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework
