Job Overview

The role is pivotal in ensuring the provision of exceptional oncological services to patients within the healthcare trust while also playing a significant part in the ongoing enhancement of the service.

The successful candidate will serve as the primary oncologist for various cancer types, including gynaecological and breast cancers, and may take on additional responsibilities for the management of other malignancies of their preference. Opportunities exist to collaborate with the breast care team, participate in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, and engage in specialized clinics. For those specializing in clinical oncology, there may be options to work with colorectal cases, covering clinics and radiotherapy services. As with many cancer treatment facilities, there has been a notable increase in patient referrals for treatment, alongside a growing utilization of advanced chemotherapy options, including monoclonal antibodies and innovative therapeutic agents. The appointee will be expected to uphold and advance the multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with these cancers, enhance patient participation in clinical trials, and expand services to meet the evolving needs of patients.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

• Collaborate with colleagues across various healthcare facilities to deliver a comprehensive cancer service for patients with gynaecological and breast tumors.

• Engage in multidisciplinary meetings to review pertinent histology and radiology cases.

• Provide clinical leadership in the capacity of Gynaecology and Breast Oncology Lead.

• Actively participate in the consultant-led ward service, ensuring optimal care for oncological in-patients and the Acute Oncology Service for both in-patients and out-patients.

• Contribute to ongoing research initiatives utilizing available clinical and laboratory resources.

Organizational Responsibilities

• Mentor and train junior staff, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.

• Serve as a clinical and educational supervisor for locally employed doctors and trainees across various levels of experience.

• Actively engage in departmental and trust-wide matters related to Clinical Governance and audit.

The appointed consultant will be expected to participate in the continuous service improvement initiatives, including:

Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) Cost Improvement Programme (CIP) Implementing evidence-based practices when necessary

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 Full Registration and a license to practice with the General Medical Council. Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview

Postgraduate thesis awarded or pending

Essential Criteria

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Medical Oncology Extensive experience in chemotherapy prescribing, including E-prescribing. Experience in Acute Oncology Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework
