Job Overview

As a Neonatal Care Specialist, you will assume significant responsibilities and make critical clinical decisions in the realm of neonatal health. This role encompasses the assessment of newborns, early detection of potential health risks, execution of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, interpretation of clinical findings, and the initiation of suitable treatment or referrals based on independent decision-making.

You will serve as a professional exemplar, holding accountability for advanced nursing practices while showcasing exemplary professional standards and personal integrity in a leadership capacity.

Effective communication within the department will be paramount, ensuring the maintenance of robust information systems and the timely dissemination of essential information.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver advanced and specialized skills, guidance, leadership, and educational support to the multidisciplinary team. Provide clinical leadership alongside the Paediatric Consultant in coordinating nursing and medical care within the Neonatal Unit, as well as for neonates in the Delivery Suite and postnatal ward. Offer advanced clinical expertise, specialized advice, and educational resources to the multidisciplinary team. Ensure comprehensive, individualized intensive, high-dependency, and special care for neonates. Undertake Tier 1 responsibilities on the Neonatal medical rota, functioning at a senior practitioner level and assuming roles traditionally held by junior medical staff. Exercise a high degree of professional autonomy, collaborate across professional boundaries, and make critical judgments to meet the expectations and demands of the role, while developing and adhering to clinical protocols.

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential Criteria

Qualification in Neonatal Intensive Care (ENB 405/QIS course) Registered Nurse with a BSc Hons degree. Master’s degree in a health-related field. Advanced Nursing Practice qualification. New-born Life Support Provider certification (UK Resuscitation Council). Safeguarding Level 3 training.

Desirable Criteria

Demonstrated ability to conduct audits and research.

Essential Criteria

Advanced clinical skills and theoretical knowledge in neonatal care. Leadership capabilities and the ability to manage change and innovation. High-level interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to plan and develop specialized educational programs, teach, assess, and present effectively. Capacity to work independently, organize, and prioritize workload efficiently. Proficiency in recognizing neonatal issues, analyzing, interpreting, diagnosing, and intervening or referring appropriately. Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection, domestic violence, and substance misuse issues. Ability to convey complex, sensitive, and emotional information to families regarding neonatal health and treatment.

Desirable Criteria

Capability to perform in place of junior paediatric doctors and in the absence of other medical assistance. Ability to provide specialized advice and consultation to the multidisciplinary team. Familiarity with local clinical networks and the ability to collaborate closely with peers in other organizations. Competence in leading high-pressure clinical situations such as resuscitation and emergency care management. Ability to act as a resource and advisor in neonatal care for the multidisciplinary team.

PPE Requirements: All staff are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with infection prevention and control protocols.
