About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. As a CNS, you will provide expert nursing care to patients with tracheostomies or laryngectomies, working closely with the multi-professional team.

Main Responsibilities
  • Act as a key worker for patients with tracheostomies or laryngectomies, providing expert nursing care and support
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings to plan and action patient care, including routine tracheostomy set changes
  • Work autonomously in managing a caseload of patients, including nurse-led clinics
  • Support patients with respiratory weans and eventual decannulation
  • Act as a specialist resource for knowledge and deliver teaching sessions to Trust staff
  • Support the pathway of inpatients from surgery through to discharge
  • Contribute to service development and audit

Person Specification
  • Essential:
    • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
    • Evidence of post-registration CPD/post-registration qualification in altered airway management or relevant alternative
    • Evidence of completed tracheostomy management competency
    • Expanded practice in decannulation procedure
  • Desirable:
    • Evidence of training or courses related to airway management or head and neck cancer care
    • Competence in tracheostomy set changes
Experience
  • Essential:
    • Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
    • Significant post-registration experience, with evidence of passion/enthusiasm and knowledge for altered airway management
    • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/competence
    • Demonstrate specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to altered airway management
    • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting
    • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross-agency work environment
    • Demonstrate understanding/experience/willingness to be a practice-based supervisor/assessor as detailed in the NMC
  • Desirable:
    • Experience in service development
