Job Overview

The primary objective of this role is to oversee and provide exceptional technical assistance within the educational laboratories and workshop environments utilized by the School of Education. This includes offering specialized technical knowledge in relevant technological fields.

The individual in this position will be accountable for the organization and daily operations of the laboratory, workshop, and specialized facilities. This encompasses ensuring that all necessary equipment, materials, and supplies are readily available for use as needed.

Additionally, the role involves supervising the activities of teaching support personnel and managing practical skills laboratory sessions for students in the MDTechEd program.

Key Responsibilities 1. Plan, prepare, and manage the educational laboratory while providing expert technical guidance to users.

Oversee and deliver advanced training to assist users in utilizing complex technical resources and applying specialized techniques.

Administer resources within the educational lab, including supervising teaching support staff, managing budgets, and overseeing lab space, equipment, and systems.

Ensure the optimal operational delivery of technical resources and strive for continuous improvement in service quality.

Engage with suppliers to guarantee the acquisition of high-quality consumables at competitive prices while maintaining adequate stock levels.

Design, develop, and construct relevant technical resources for educational purposes, ensuring high standards of quality and precision, within established timelines to achieve educational goals.

Provide advice on the most effective techniques to meet teaching objectives. 4.

Oversee the maintenance and replenishment of materials and ensure the efficient operation of 3D printing and Laser Cutter facilities within the workshop.

5. Troubleshoot intricate technical challenges. Offer expert technical advice to propose, implement, and assess enhancements to Standard Operating Procedures. Diagnose and resolve issues with specialized equipment, adhering to safe and professional standards. 6.

Stay informed about standards and advancements in the relevant discipline or specialty and actively pursue professional development opportunities to expand knowledge and skills.

Ensure adherence to Health and Safety regulations and other essential requirements associated with workshop operations, including a thorough understanding and implementation of institutional policies.

Proactively address areas of risk and non-compliance. 8.

Participate in management meetings, contributing specialized technical insights aimed at enhancing the experience of service users and providing a modern facility aligned with educational objectives.

Offer technical guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students on electronic design and graphics software, including Kicad, Inventor, Fusion, CFD, and AutoCad.

10.

Demonstrate the necessary techniques for successful Printed Circuit Board design and manufacturing using software such as KiCad, VeeCad, and LTSpice.

Provide direction and technical advice to students within the workshop setting on the electronic and mechanical design of Robotics projects, including power supply design and Arduino programming.

Qualifications and Skills Required Essential: A1 Demonstrated competencies required for this level of position, having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar capacity, or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent experience in a similar role.
A2 Working knowledge of various electronics theories and practical applications.
A3 Familiarity with computer programming and software development.
A4 Understanding of electronic circuit design and analysis techniques.
A5 Proficient in diagnosing electronic faults and executing repairs.
A6 Comprehensive knowledge of relevant health and safety protocols and procedures.

Desirable: B1 Proficient understanding of electronic prototyping techniques and associated design tools such as KiCad, VeeCad, or similar.
B2 Familiarity with software simulation of electronic circuits using LTSpice or similar.

Skills Required Essential: C1 Demonstrated skills in analogue and digital electronic circuit design and analysis.
C2 Experience with electrical testing and measuring equipment.
C3 Strong IT skills, including proficiency in relevant specialist software packages.
C4 Good mechanical skills with the ability to fabricate and assemble mechanical components.
C5 Proven interpersonal and communication abilities.
C6 Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

C7 Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when handling complex data.

C8 Ability to plan and prioritize work for oneself and others, along with resource allocation to meet user needs.

C9 Significant relevant experience in delivering high-quality technical services in a complex laboratory environment.

Desirable: D1 Ability to comprehend, conceptualize, and interpret technical requirements for a diverse range of service users, adapting communication style to meet varying needs.

Experience Required Essential: E1 Experience in providing technical support in a similar role.
E2 Experience in advising and training students and/or staff on technical issues.
E3 Experience in setting up experimental apparatus and optimizing systems.

E4 Experience in establishing and managing Standard Operating Procedures to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the lab/workshop, including experience in implementing Health and Safety protocols for service users or other legal requirements.

Desirable: F1 Experience in programming Microcontrollers and Embedded Electronic systems. Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 6, with a competitive annual salary.
