Job Overview

Position: Head of Commercial

Location: Birmingham

Compensation: Competitive base salary commensurate with experience, supplemented by a flexible benefits fund of 20% on top of the base salary, fully pensionable, alongside a variety of attractive benefits.

As the Head of Commercial at HS2, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Interchange Station and Automated People Mover Project Client and Stations Commercial Director, ensuring the safe and timely delivery of projects within budget and quality standards.

The Interchange will serve as one of the UK's most well-connected railway stations, featuring an Automated People Mover designed to transport thousands of passengers per hour along a 2.3km route to key destinations.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Contract Phase:
  • Provide essential commercial insights to inform procurement and commercial strategies, ensuring value for money in major infrastructure contracts.
  • Assist the Procurement team in developing and delivering comprehensive tender and contract documentation.
  • Support the formulation and execution of tender evaluation models and plans.
Procurement Phase:
  • Facilitate the evaluation, moderation, and negotiation of tenders, ensuring successful contract awards.
  • Support the governance processes of HS2.
  • Develop and implement a robust contract management plan.
  • Ensure readiness for contract execution.
Post-Contract Phase:
  • Oversee the contract management of significant HS2 infrastructure contracts, maintaining effective commercial control.
  • Assess variations, compensation events, contract payments, and performance incentives.
  • Lead monthly management reviews and contract performance assessments.
  • Resolve supply chain disputes and provide ongoing commercial advice to the client team.
  • Identify opportunities for project savings and develop proposals for approval.
  • Foster a collaborative culture within Integrated Project Teams (IPT) to encourage innovation and best practices.
  • Manage the commercial relationship with key contractors and oversee the review of estimates at all stages.
  • Promote and integrate Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles in all aspects of work.

Essential Skills:
  • Proven ability to lead and manage high-value contracts in complex infrastructure projects.
  • Expertise in developing commercial and procurement strategies for large-scale projects.
  • Strong negotiation skills to resolve disputes while maintaining critical commercial relationships.
  • Ability to manage diverse stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Experience in enhancing commercial policies and processes.
  • Leadership capabilities to recruit and develop commercial teams.
