Position Overview

We are seeking a Lead Nurse for our Trauma Orthopaedic Unit:

This unit specializes in trauma-related orthopaedic care.

Our facility accommodates 30 patients, including 5 private rooms.

You will collaborate with 3 Band 6 Nurses.

Patients in this unit follow a structured Trauma Pathway, supported by our Perioperative Older People’s Service (POPS).

The Ortho-geriatric Team provides additional support for trauma patients.

This unit operates 24/7, with your primary responsibilities typically occurring during weekdays. You will receive guidance from colleagues in other surgical units and the Matron regarding care pathways, documentation, Trust protocols, and operational systems.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will maintain ongoing responsibility for:

  • Assessing care needs, developing care programs, and establishing care standards throughout the 24-hour period.
  • Managing the ward, including the deployment of nursing staff and mentoring learners.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

Coordinate patient care delivery throughout the 24-hour period, ensuring effective communication within the unit and collaboration with medical staff and other disciplines.

Be accountable for assessing patient care needs and developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based care programs, ensuring compliance with all policies and guidelines set forth by Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust and all legal/statutory requirements.

Ensure that all nursing documentation is completed accurately and legibly by yourself and your team to meet Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust and legal standards.

Candidate Profile

Education and Training

Essential:

  • Registered Nurse/Degree level qualification
  • ENB998/practice assessor course/student mentorship course
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable:

  • Degree or in progress towards a degree.
  • A recognized course within the specialty
  • Research evidence

Knowledge and Skills

Essential:

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Proficient IT skills
  • Human resource management skills
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and empathetically
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and record-keeping skills
  • Effective prioritization and time management skills
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative both interpersonally and clinically
  • Capability to work independently or as part of a team

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and research experience within the specific specialty

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience as a Band 6 Nurse in a general surgical ward or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Experience with the Surgical Enhanced Recovery Program
  • Experience with productive ward initiatives
  • Experience in recruitment processes

Personal Attributes

Essential:

  • Completion of a recognized management course (or willingness to undertake one)
  • Experience in following up on incident reporting

Desirable:

  • Experience in budget management at the ward level
  • Experience in handling complaints
  • Experience with the appraisal process
