Job Overview
The University of Glasgow is looking to recruit a Laboratory Operations Supervisor to oversee the efficient functioning of our laboratory facilities.

The primary objective of this role is to enhance the operational framework that supports various academic disciplines, ensuring the effective management of sterilization and cleaning services for research laboratories within the institution. Main Responsibilities

1. Supervise the laboratory cleaning team, ensuring the provision of sterilization, biological waste management, and cleaning services, while reporting directly to the Laboratory Manager.
2. Manage the daily operations of the laboratory, organizing and prioritizing the workflow effectively.
3. Ensure compliance with established procedures to deliver a consistently high-quality and safe service.
4. Accept and process laboratory glassware, plasticware, and other materials for cleaning and sterilization as needed.
5. Coordinate the collection and documentation of lab coats for laundering.
6. Repair damaged glassware using appropriate techniques.
7. Handle pipettes and waste materials, ensuring proper sterilization through autoclaving.
8. Operate and maintain washing machines, autoclaves, and sterilizing equipment.
9. Ensure safe disposal of all waste materials in accordance with institutional policies.
10. Maintain meticulous cleanliness and conduct quality control checks on laboratory materials.
11. Monitor stock levels and place orders through the appropriate channels when necessary.
12. Uphold general cleanliness and organization within the laboratory areas.
13. Keep accurate records for financial recharging purposes.
14. Manage monthly accounts and the recharging of material costs.
15. Schedule and oversee regular maintenance for all laboratory equipment.
16. Prepare specialized media and solutions as required.
17. Provide training and support to laboratory staff to uphold operational standards and service quality.
18. Develop and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments for laboratory operations.

Required Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential Knowledge/Qualifications
A1. Relevant qualifications at Scottish Credit and Qualification framework level 5 or 6 or equivalent experience in a similar role.
A2. Comprehensive understanding of glassware cleaning protocols and autoclaving processes.
A3. In-depth knowledge of Health and Safety regulations, particularly regarding cleaning agents and safe manual handling practices.

Essential Experience
E1. Demonstrated competencies through relevant experience in a similar supervisory role.
E2. Proven experience in team supervision.
E3. Familiarity with laboratory housekeeping responsibilities.
E4. Experience in preparing and managing cleaning and disinfectant chemicals.
E5. Regular use of MS Office 365 applications.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be aligned with Grade 4, offering a competitive remuneration package. This position is part-time and open-ended.
