Stockport, United Kingdom OCU Full time

OCU is a prominent multi-utility and energy transition construction firm recognized for its rapid expansion and innovative methodologies. Operating across various sectors and locations throughout the UK, we are on a committed and sustainable growth path. Our established reputation for excellence and industry leadership drives us to seek a strategic Head of Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality to become an integral part of our Executive Leadership Team.

The Head of SHEQ will play a crucial role within our Executive Committee and leadership team, tasked with shaping and steering the strategic direction of Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Technical Training functions throughout the organization. This position requires a combination of strategic foresight, operational proficiency, and transformational leadership to foster a culture of continuous enhancement and sustainable practices.

We are in search of a seasoned Senior HSE/SHEQ professional who is passionate, dynamic, hands-on, and resilient, now seeking a new opportunity with prior experience in a transformative organization. You will be a forward-thinking leader capable of developing, implementing, and overseeing the SHEQ function within the business, with expectations for frequent travel to various UK sites and the head office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Formulate and execute a comprehensive SHEQ strategy that aligns with our business objectives and growth ambitions. Influence and advise the Board of Directors and senior management on SHEQ issues while representing the organization externally as a brand ambassador.
  • Operational Excellence: Supervise the implementation of SHEQ policies, procedures, and cultural initiatives across the organization to ensure that integrated management systems (IMS) are effective in all projects and locations, maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations while adopting a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Culture and Engagement: Manage the OCU SHEQ culture maturity program, collaborating closely with functional stakeholders to develop, implement, and assess effectiveness in alignment with organizational values to foster an empowered and engaged workforce. Lead the safety maturity strategy for the organization.
  • Innovation and Improvement: Discover and apply innovative practices and technologies to enhance SHEQ performance. Spearhead initiatives that promote operational efficiency and risk mitigation. Serve as a key stakeholder and expert to support the OCU ONE digital platform design for SHEQ, enabling real-time analytics to facilitate effective decision-making aimed at reducing and mitigating risks.
  • Performance Management: Establish ambitious SHEQ performance targets, monitor progress, and ensure precise reporting. Utilize data-driven insights to guide decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Strategic Vision: A proactive leader with the capacity to foresee future challenges and opportunities, translating them into actionable strategies. Experienced brand ambassador externally, leveraging SHEQ as a value-added component for growth in emerging and existing markets.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate closely with clients, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of SHEQ governance and enhance our industry reputation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Leadership Experience: Proven success in a senior SHEQ/HSE leadership role within the construction, civil engineering, or a related sector, with experience representing the organization both internally and externally. Experience presenting at the board level is essential.
  • Change Management: Demonstrated ability to influence and mentor senior leaders to drive successful change management initiatives. Experienced in mergers and acquisitions and integrating SHEQ in a fast-paced, growing business environment.
  • Professional Credentials: Chartered Membership of IOSH and a relevant degree-level qualification or equivalent. Sustainability/ESG IEMA certification is preferred, along with experience in leading quality and training functions.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse teams and stakeholders, including executives, to drive world-class SHEQ across the organization.
