Position Overview

We are in search of a dedicated and skilled individual to join our Cellular Pathology Department as a full-time, permanent Advanced Biomedical Scientist. The ideal candidate will be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has successfully completed the IBMS Specialist portfolio (or an equivalent qualification) in Cellular Pathology. Proficiency in histology laboratory techniques is a prerequisite.

Departmental Innovation

Our department is at the forefront of innovation, being the first in the UK to digitally scan all surgical slides and to introduce automated tissue sectioners. We are a regional leader in Cellular Pathology Genomics and have appointed a Transformation Lead to enhance our service development, supported by a Pathology Technology & Innovation Lead.

The department operates six days a week, offering both standard and extended day shift patterns.

Key Responsibilities

As an Advanced Biomedical Scientist, you will be a fully competent member of the team, responsible for a diverse range of specialized clinical technical investigations. You will work collaboratively within a team and may also be required to operate independently, particularly during on-call duties. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely services for patients.

Your role will include:

  • Assisting in the daily operations of a laboratory section under the guidance of the Advanced Biomedical Scientist.
  • Conducting quality control and external quality assurance authorizations.
  • Training and mentoring support staff.
  • Participating in risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Engaging in human resources procedures as necessary.

About Our Department

We provide a comprehensive range of services including Histopathology, Non-Gynae Cytology, Andrology, Muscle, Nerve, Immunohistochemistry, Molecular, and Mortuary services. Our department processes a significant volume of surgical and autopsy cases annually, striving for excellence in quality and continuous improvement.

Work Environment

The role may require rotation across various sites and sections, and participation in the departmental on-call rota is expected once competency is achieved.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates must possess:

  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in Cellular Pathology.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Competence in utilizing pathology LIMS and IT systems.
  • Independent problem-solving abilities.
