Advanced Speech and Language Therapist for Critical Care Services

Position Overview
This role presents a unique opportunity to enhance our critical care services across multiple hospital sites.
The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, and support staff within the critical care environment.
This position will play a pivotal role in the advancement of patient clinical pathways as part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and will stay informed on the latest evidence-based practices.
The individual will be expected to lead service enhancements for Speech and Language Therapy and mentor junior staff to cultivate their clinical skills in this specialty.
Clinical experience in critical care is essential, along with the ability to demonstrate relevant expertise and provide proof of successful service improvement initiatives.
As part of the Hospital Transformation project, there will be a transition of all critical care services to a designated site in the coming years.
The successful candidate will spearhead the development of Speech and Language Therapy services within the unit.
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of this role include:
- Leading and delivering specialized Speech and Language Therapy care to patients in Critical Care units and continuing care on the wards as necessary.
- Conducting swallowing and communication assessments for all patients with new tracheostomies, including those on mechanical ventilation, in accordance with GPICS standards.
- Providing timely evaluations for all critically ill patients experiencing communication and/or swallowing challenges, adhering to GPICS standards.
- Offering support and educational resources to colleagues both within and outside the unit.
- Exhibiting evidence of clinical expertise in this domain and adhering to evidence-based practices.

Job Requirements
Qualifications
Essential
- HCPC recognized qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Current HCPC registration.
Desirable
- Critical care qualification or relevant MSc modules.
Experience

- Demonstrated extensive experience in this clinical area.
- Experience in teaching and presenting.
- Experience in conducting audits and measuring outcomes.
Desirable
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams to influence service delivery.
Knowledge

- Evidence of recent relevant continuing professional development (CPD).
- Experience in implementing service development initiatives.
- Knowledge of relevant evidence-based practices.
- Demonstrated advanced clinical skills and clinical reasoning abilities.
- Familiarity with national and local drivers for this clinical area.
