Overview

The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee and manage a team of student employees, typically ranging from six to eight individuals each semester. This position is also tasked with developing training resources and establishing policies for student staff. Additionally, the role involves maintaining the Reserve Books Room, managing data collection for library services, and organizing files related to patron accounts. As part of the supervisory duties, this position will assist the Library head in managing the Student Worker budget. The position reports directly to the Library Manager, Archives & Special Collections/LLC Building Manager. This role contributes to the formulation and execution of library policies, procedures, and workflows. Participation in library and campus committees is expected, along with assisting in the coordination and staffing of outreach activities, programming, and events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and supervise hourly student staff, with potential oversight of permanent staff.
  • Ensure the quality of library circulation services through effective staff scheduling, training, evaluation, and communication. Directly provide circulation services as needed.
  • Prioritize and manage workloads for oneself and team members, ensuring timely completion of tasks within set guidelines.
  • Collect, compile, and manage statistics related to library usage and reference inquiries at the circulation desk.
  • Oversee projects related to the shelving, relocation, and maintenance of library materials.
  • Develop documentation and schedules for training student staff.
  • Maintain organized files pertaining to student workers.
  • Assist in the upkeep and updating of library hours on websites, collaborating with IT for door lock schedules.
  • Manage the scheduling of library spaces and post signage for events, closures, and reservations.
  • Collaborate with library staff to create and implement policies and procedures.
  • Administer the student worker budget, assist in setting wages, and work with the library head on budget adjustments.
  • Help distribute promotional materials for the library.
  • Create or assist in maintaining book displays within the library.
  • Provide support for makerspace and special collections patrons, alongside the building manager.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree; or an Associate degree with two years of library experience; or four years of library experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn library-related software and equipment, including microfilm technology.
  • Understanding of or ability to learn makerspace tools and programs.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Word, Excel, Canva, and web browsers.
  • Strong record-keeping abilities.
  • Knowledge of inventory control and ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Skills in database management.
  • Ability to meet deadlines effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, fostering positive relationships with colleagues, patrons, and external partners.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to assist patrons and stakeholders.
  • Capability to organize work efficiently, prioritize objectives, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to make procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Knowledge or ability to train in professional library practices and techniques.

Minimum $27,923; salary is commensurate with experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
