Laboratory Apprentice in Marine Biogeochemistry

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science Full time

Position Overview

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) stands at the forefront of marine research and technology, delivering pioneering solutions for aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and food sustainability. We are offering an apprenticeship opportunity within our Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology sectors, focusing on the preparation and analysis of various crucial biogeochemical indicators, such as oxygen levels and inorganic nutrient concentrations, as well as sediment characteristics including particle size, metal content, and carbon levels in marine samples. You will also assist in the collection of samples. This role is primarily laboratory-based, requiring significant time spent in our facilities. Opportunities may arise to participate in sample collection during surveys and fieldwork, along with potential cross-training in related disciplines such as chemistry and radiochemistry.

The Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology teams consist of a diverse group of scientists dedicated to providing high-quality analytical support, data analysis, and scientific guidance for a wide range of internal and external projects for both UK and international clients.

Role Responsibilities

This apprenticeship will equip you with the skills and techniques necessary for safe laboratory practices and adherence to quality protocols. You will gain analytical expertise to support the daily functions of the Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology laboratories. Comprehensive training and supervision will be provided, although candidates are expected to be self-driven, eager to acquire new skills, and capable of following directions. Your responsibilities during the apprenticeship will include:

  • Preparing and processing various environmental samples (both sediment and water) for an array of analyses, including Particle Size Analysis (PSA), Organic Carbon and Nitrogen (OCN), dissolved oxygen concentration (dO2), and pigments, ensuring no cross-contamination occurs.
  • Performing miscellaneous tasks related to laboratory maintenance, such as keeping the workspace clean and organized, calibrating equipment, and preparing reagents.
  • Monitoring laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring timely replenishment as needed.
  • Assisting in the management of sample storage and documentation.
  • Adhering to safety protocols and working efficiently, following Risk Assessments (RA), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with guidance from technical managers and trainers.

Cefas reserves the right to assign additional duties and responsibilities that align with your role. Team leaders and management will communicate any changes to staff, and a revised job description will be provided if necessary.

Candidate Profile

To qualify for this apprenticeship, you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • A strong interest in environmental science and marine studies.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Highly self-motivated, organized, adaptable, and possessing solid problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in IT, with experience in standard Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to tasks.
  • Capacity to show initiative, self-awareness, and adaptability to various situations.
  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English (proof of qualifications will be required during pre-employment checks).

Assessment Criteria

During the selection process, candidates will be evaluated based on the following behaviors:

  • Collaboration
  • Efficiency in Delivering Results
  • Quality Service Management

Evidence of these behaviors will be requested in your application form.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Benefits include:

  • Generous annual leave of 25 days on entry, increasing to 30 days over the first five years, plus 8 public holidays and an additional day for the King's birthday.
  • Access to tailored learning and development opportunities.
  • A flexible working environment.
  • A culture that promotes inclusion and diversity.
  • Eligibility to join the Civil Service Pension scheme.
