Junior Laboratory Technician in Marine Science

3 weeks ago

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science Full time

Position Overview

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) stands at the forefront of marine research and technology, delivering pioneering solutions for aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and food sustainability. We are offering an apprenticeship opportunity within our Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology divisions, where you will engage in the preparation and analysis of critical biogeochemical metrics, such as oxygen levels and inorganic nutrient concentrations, alongside sediment characteristics like particle distribution, metal content, and carbon levels in marine samples. You will also assist in the collection of samples. This role is primarily laboratory-based, necessitating significant time spent in our facilities. There may also be chances to participate in sample collection during surveys and field studies, along with potential cross-training in related fields such as chemistry and radiochemistry.

The Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology teams consist of a diverse group of scientists dedicated to providing high-quality analytical services, data interpretation, and scientific guidance to a wide array of internal and external projects for both UK and international clients.

Role Responsibilities

This apprenticeship will enable you to acquire the necessary skills and methodologies to operate safely within a laboratory setting while adhering to quality protocols. You will gain analytical expertise to support the daily functions of the Biogeochemistry and Sedimentology labs. Comprehensive training and supervision will be provided, yet candidates are expected to be self-driven, eager to learn, and capable of following directions. During your apprenticeship, your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and processing various environmental samples (sediment and water) for a variety of analyses, including Particle Size Analysis (PSA), Organic Carbon and Nitrogen (OCN), dissolved oxygen concentration (dO2), and pigments, ensuring no cross-contamination occurs.
  • Performing general laboratory maintenance tasks (keeping the workspace clean and organized, calibrating instruments, preparing reagents, etc.).
  • Monitoring laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring timely replenishment as needed.
  • Assisting in the management of sample storage and record-keeping.
  • Working safely and efficiently, complying with Risk Assessments (RA), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) assessments, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with guidance from your technical supervisors and trainers.

Cefas reserves the right to assign additional duties and responsibilities appropriate to your grade. Management will discuss any changes with staff to clarify the adjustments. A revised job description will be provided if necessary.

To qualify for this apprenticeship position, you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • A strong interest in environmental science and marine studies;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team;

  • A commitment to continuous learning and personal development;
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a methodical and patient approach to tasks;
