Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a fixed-term Ophthalmic Science Associate Practitioner to become part of a dynamic ophthalmology unit.

The role encompasses conducting technical and imaging evaluations to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients utilizing the service. As our virtual clinic services expand, the Associate Practitioner will serve as the primary contact for clinical appointments, necessitating strong communication and organizational abilities. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with our optometry, orthoptic, and medical teams, playing a vital role in delivering ophthalmology services and direct patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Engage in the provision of care across all facets of the Ophthalmology service, delivering technical services across a broad spectrum of ophthalmic practices.

Exhibit sound clinical judgment in all ophthalmic technical assessments to ensure precise measurements are obtained.

Demonstrate a high level of accuracy in utilizing specialized equipment to achieve reliable measurements.

Show effective communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse patient population as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Oversee the training of new staff members and colleagues in all technical assessments performed.

Adapt flexibly to meet the service's needs, which may include training for additional roles.

Exhibit a strong team-oriented approach in delivering high-quality patient care.

Utilize time management and organizational skills to ensure the efficient operation of individual clinics and the broader service.

Job Duties

As an Ophthalmic Science Associate Practitioner, you will uphold a high standard of clinical work across all areas. This includes performing automated and manual visual field tests, conducting biometric assessments using ultrasonography and optical biometry, and executing optical coherence tomography along with measuring visual acuity and intraocular pressure.

Function as a flexible member of the broader ophthalmic team, conducting technical assessments on patients of all ages with varying communication abilities referred from multiple sources.

Employ analytical and judgment skills to customize care delivery according to individual patient needs, adapting emotional, mental, and physical responses as necessary. This role requires sustained concentration while managing the competing demands of an unpredictable daily clinical workload.

Exhibit considerable manual dexterity and speed in various clinical procedures to ensure accurate results and imaging.

Participate in departmental audits and research initiatives as required.

Ensure adherence to infection control protocols.

Comply with our clinical governance framework.

The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in the Ophthalmology Department, which includes Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Technicians, and nursing and administrative staff.

The Ophthalmology department is a bustling environment within a large teaching hospital, with the Ophthalmic Technician and Imaging services operating at a high capacity, featuring a mix of scheduled appointments and on-demand services.

Ophthalmology Services encompass eye casualty, day case, inpatient, and outpatient facilities, with strong ties to academic institutions through research and collaboration with regional screening services. Our team of Consultant Ophthalmologists provides outpatient and surgical services across a comprehensive range of ophthalmology subspecialties.

The post holder will be required to work various shifts to accommodate the service's needs, including weekdays, weekends, and bank holidays, with varying hours.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE or equivalent standard with passes at A - C or equivalent in English and Maths.
  • Recent clinical experience in ophthalmology.
  • Prior experience in patient/public interaction or customer service skills.

Desirable

  • Experience with IOL master and/or ultrasound for Biometry.
