Job Overview

Position: Building Standards Team Leader
Salary: £50,000 - £54,000

We are seeking a skilled and driven professional in building standards to take on the role of Team Leader within our high-performing Building Standards division.

Your primary responsibilities will include overseeing a team of Surveyors, Assistant Surveyors, and a Modern Apprentice, while collaborating closely with the Business Support Team and other departments within the Economy, Development, and Planning sector, as well as the broader Perth & Kinross Council (PKC) Services.

The Building Standards division plays a crucial role in PKC's mission to create a Perth & Kinross where all individuals can thrive, free from poverty and inequality. This mission is guided by our seven key priorities:

  • Collaborating with communities
  • Addressing poverty
  • Combating climate change and fostering sustainable environments
  • Building a resilient, stronger, and greener local economy
  • Empowering children and young people to reach their full potential
  • Protecting and supporting our most vulnerable citizens
  • Promoting physical and mental health

The Building Standards division is integral to the ongoing development of Perth & Kinross, ensuring an efficient and seamless development consent process through close cooperation among various service areas. This collaboration facilitates development while ensuring that construction activities across our diverse urban and rural communities adhere to safety standards, support sustainable development goals, and prioritize the safety of individuals in and around buildings.

In this role, you will also be instrumental in staff development and enhancing service processes and procedures to uphold our high performance and customer satisfaction standards.

You will effectively manage your team and workload, whether working collaboratively or independently. Strong communication, IT, and organizational skills, along with a commitment to quality customer service, project delivery, and continuous improvement, are essential.

If you are a collaborative leader capable of navigating various challenges, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.

For connection and collaboration with colleagues and the community, our full-time employees are expected to work on-site for a minimum of two days per week, with arrangements for part-time employees tailored to ensure equivalent benefits.

Qualifications

To excel in this position, you should possess a qualification in building standards or a related field, membership in a relevant professional institute, substantial experience in a building standards environment, and knowledge of the legislation and procedures pertaining to building standards policy and practice. A valid UK driving license is required for travel across Perth and Kinross.

Benefits

We offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive range of employee benefits, including hybrid and flexible working arrangements to promote a healthy work-life balance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, a Low Carbon Car Scheme, up to 36 days of annual leave plus six public holidays, and various lifestyle and wellbeing initiatives through our employee benefits platform.

Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be conducted in person.

When applying for this position, please ensure you provide contact details for two referees, one of whom should be your current or most recent employer.

As part of our commitment to safer recruitment, any job offer will be contingent upon the successful completion of mandatory checks, including eligibility to work in the UK, background checks, qualifications verification, references, and fitness for the role.

We prioritize a healthy work-life balance at Perth & Kinross Council and provide supportive management and flexible working arrangements to help you achieve this balance. Training and support for continued professional development are also available.

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and encourage those with military experience to apply, as many skills gained in the armed forces can be directly applicable to a role in local government.
