Position Overview

The Lead Systems Administrator will report directly to the Infrastructure Lead and is tasked with overseeing, managing, and maintaining the IT infrastructure of the University, ensuring the seamless operation of all IT systems, including servers, storage solutions, networks, and security protocols.

In addition to routine operations within the infrastructure and data centers, the individual in this role will significantly contribute to the establishment of new operational practices through the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), IT work-packages, server enhancements, and vulnerability/patch management initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Deliver expert installation, configuration, and maintenance of a secure and resilient server infrastructure, encompassing both physical and virtual servers, database servers, storage systems, and cloud-based platforms.

  2. Oversee system performance monitoring and proactively resolve issues to guarantee optimal uptime and performance.
  3. Mentor junior team members in troubleshooting and resolving technical challenges to minimize system outages.
  4. Provide specialized technical guidance and troubleshooting support to end users, IT personnel, and other stakeholders, addressing system-related inquiries and service requests promptly and professionally.

  5. Offer expert advice on IT infrastructure to support the research activities of university staff and researchers.
  6. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT professionals, academic staff, and external vendors, to plan and execute infrastructure projects, upgrades, and migrations, ensuring alignment with university objectives and priorities.

  7. Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting methodologies, maintaining comprehensive records and knowledge base articles to facilitate knowledge sharing, training, and operational continuity.

  8. Contribute to disaster recovery and business continuity efforts by participating in backup and restoration activities.
  9. Perform any additional duties and projects as required by the Line Manager or Head of IT.

Required Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential Knowledge/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated competencies necessary for this level of position, having acquired the requisite knowledge and skills in a comparable role.
  • Strong understanding of server and network administration principles.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server and/or Linux/Unix operating systems.
  • Excellent understanding of information security best practices in a diverse networked environment.

Essential Skills:

  • Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Proven proficiency in scripting languages, such as Windows PowerShell/Linux shell script, for automation and batch operations.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, with the capability to analyze complex requirements and design effective solutions.
  • Adaptability to evolving technologies and procedures to ensure the university remains at the forefront while fostering an environment that encourages team members to do the same.
  • Experience working with a diverse range of end users with varying levels of technical knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within an IT team, providing guidance to junior staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication style to meet the needs of others.

Desirable Skills:

  • Familiarity with formal problem-solving frameworks supporting root cause analysis (e.g., 5-Whys, Fishbone).
  • Working knowledge of ISO2700-1 and Cyber Essentials Plus frameworks.

Essential Experience:

  • Significant experience with a variety of operating systems beyond Windows desktops, including Linux, MacOS, and Windows Server.
  • Extensive experience in designing scalable servers, including storage management, network services and protocols, backup solutions, virtualization systems (e.g., Hyper-V, Docker), user authentication (e.g., Active Directory, LDAP), and database management.
  • Considerable experience in installing, configuring, and supporting specialized software.

Desirable Experience:

  • Prior experience in a university or higher education environment.
  • Strong knowledge of system monitoring and capacity planning for server infrastructure.
  • Experience with server systems (e.g., Windows, Linux) covering management tools, threat management, compliance and risk, server patching, and business continuity planning.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary will be aligned with Grade 6, ranging from £32,332 to £36,024 per annum.

This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and permanent.
