Job Overview

The Lead Systems Administrator will report to the Infrastructure Lead and is tasked with overseeing, managing, and maintaining the IT infrastructure of the University, ensuring the seamless operation of all IT systems, including servers, storage, networks, and security protocols.

In addition to regular operations for the infrastructure and data centers, the incumbent will significantly contribute to the implementation of innovative practices through the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), IT work-packages, server enhancements, and vulnerability/patch management.

Key Responsibilities 1.

Deliver expert installation, configuration, and maintenance of a secure and resilient server infrastructure, encompassing both physical and virtual servers, database servers, storage systems, and cloud-based platforms.

2. Monitor system performance proactively and address issues to guarantee optimal uptime and efficiency. 3. Mentor junior team members in troubleshooting and resolving technical challenges to minimize system downtime. 4.

Offer specialized technical guidance and troubleshooting support to end users, IT personnel, and other stakeholders, addressing system-related inquiries and service requests promptly and professionally.

5. Provide expert advice on IT infrastructure to support the University’s research initiatives. 6.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT professionals, academic staff, and external vendors, to plan and execute infrastructure projects, upgrades, and migrations, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and priorities.

7.

Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting methodologies, maintaining comprehensive records and knowledge base articles to facilitate knowledge sharing, training, and operational continuity.

8. Support disaster recovery and business continuity efforts by contributing to backup and restoration processes. 9.

Perform any additional duties and projects as may be required by the Line Manager or Head of IT.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential: A1 Either:
Demonstrate the competencies necessary to fulfill the responsibilities associated with this level of position, having acquired the requisite knowledge and skills in a comparable role.

Or:

Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, along with experience in a similar capacity.

A2 Strong grasp of server and network administration principles.
A3 Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server and/or Linux/Unix operating systems.
A4 Comprehensive understanding of information security best practices in a diverse networked environment.

Skills Essential: C1 Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions to prevent recurrence.

C2 Proven proficiency in scripting languages, such as Windows PowerShell/Linux shell script, for automation and batch operations.

C3 Meticulous attention to detail, with the capability to analyze intricate requirements and design effective solutions.

C4 Flexibility to adapt to evolving technologies and procedures, ensuring the University remains current while fostering an environment that encourages team members to do the same.

C5 Demonstrated experience in engaging with a diverse range of end users with varying technical expertise.
C6 Ability to work independently or collaboratively within an IT team, providing guidance to junior staff.
C7 Strong interpersonal and communication skills, adapting personal style to meet the needs of others.

Desirable: D1 Familiarity with formal problem-solving frameworks supporting root cause analysis (5-Whys, Fishbone, etc.).D2 Working knowledge of the ISO2700-1 and Cyber Essentials Plus frameworks.

Experience Essential: E1 Significant experience working with a variety of operating systems beyond Windows desktops, including Linux, MacOS, and Windows Server.
E2 Extensive experience in designing scalable servers, including but not limited to storage management, network services and protocols, backup software and techniques, virtualization systems (i.e., Hyper-V, Docker), user authentication (i.e., Active Directory, LDAP), and database management.
E3 Significant experience in installing, configuring, and supporting specialized software.

Desirable: F1 Previous experience in a University or Higher Education environment.
F2 Excellent knowledge of system monitoring and capacity planning within a server infrastructure.
F3 Experience with server systems (e.g., Windows, Linux) covering;

Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 6, £32,332 - £36,024 per annum. This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and open-ended (permanent).
