Job Overview

We are seeking dedicated, passionate, and proactive professionals to become part of our welcoming and innovative team within the Emergency Assessment Unit. Our unit is committed to enhancing the safety and quality of patient care, and we are poised for significant growth in our capacity to deliver same-day emergency and short-stay services.

The Trust offers a structured 11 PA job plan, with the potential for additional PAs based on individual circumstances. Candidates preferring a 10 PA arrangement will have their job plan adjusted accordingly. We also welcome any specialized interests, with sessional allocations considered on a case-by-case basis.

The specifics of the job plan will be collaboratively determined with the successful candidate following their appointment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Overseeing the clinical and administrative operations of the Emergency Assessment Unit
  • Coordinating medical admissions through the unit, directing patients to appropriate care pathways, short-stay beds, or facilitating discharges
  • Collaborating with nursing staff and clinical colleagues to establish joint protocols for managing emergency medical admissions
  • Developing standards, procedures, and effective systems within the unit to ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care from entry to discharge
  • Establishing clear processes for handover and specialty triage from the unit
  • Supervising junior medical staff, providing opportunities for one-on-one learning during formal and informal ward rounds
  • Actively participating in educational initiatives for junior medical staff, including formal teaching sessions and relevant clinical audits
  • Providing training and guidance to staff across various medical disciplines, nursing, and support roles as appropriate
  • Advising general practitioners on the suitability of patients for hospital admission

Job Responsibilities

  • Each consultant in the department maintains ongoing individual responsibility for the care of their patients and a collective responsibility to provide an effective service that meets the local population's needs within available resources.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a consultant-led service that adheres to the highest standards of care.
  • Work alongside the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines.
  • Foster and maintain effective working practices within wards, outpatient services, and emergency departments.
  • Encourage and promote strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in tertiary centers, community services, and primary care.
  • Provide support and leadership to junior medical staff, nursing colleagues, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council and a license to practice.
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • CCT in General Internal Medicine with sub-specialty training in acute medicine (or equivalent).
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register or a UK SpR within six months of CCT date at the time of interview.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Postgraduate degree (MD, PhD, MSc).
  • CCT in Acute Medicine and up-to-date ALS certification.
