Position Overview

We are seeking applications for the role of Senior Consultant in Geriatric Services within the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. This position involves collaborating with a dedicated team of consultants to deliver exceptional care for the elderly population in Northeast Essex.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide a Consultant-led service ensuring the highest quality of care for elderly patients.
  • Engage with a multi-disciplinary team to enhance care pathways and establish clinical guidelines.
  • Foster effective working relationships with wards, outpatient services, and the Emergency Department.
  • Encourage collaboration with colleagues across various departments and primary care.
  • Deliver educational support and leadership to junior medical staff and nursing teams.
  • Ensure the availability of pertinent information to assess clinical performance and set meaningful benchmarks.
  • Implement a thorough review process for service quality, addressing successes and areas for improvement.
  • Exemplify professional leadership, aligning with the corporate values and behaviors of the organization.
  • Oversee the training of junior doctors in accordance with College standards.
  • Participate in the evaluation of medical staff within the department as per established policies.

Clinical Duties

The appointee will:

  • Participate in acute medical intake processes, providing ongoing supervision for patients under their care.
  • Collaborate with fellow consultants to ensure comprehensive care across all aspects of elderly patient management.
  • Contribute to the formulation and implementation of protocols for elderly patient care.
  • Offer advisory services to colleagues in various specialties regarding elderly patient management.
  • Engage in teaching programs for postgraduate and undergraduate medical education.
  • Assist in the assessment and appraisal of junior medical staff as directed.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register or equivalent experience.
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in teaching across various medical education levels.
  • Expertise in managing acute medical emergencies and rehabilitation.
  • A minimum of four years at SpR level or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong decision-making skills in risk management.

Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualifications such as MD, PhD, or MSc.
  • Specialist registration in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Evidence of research contributions.
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical practice.
  • Participation in relevant teaching and management courses.
