Position Overview
We are seeking dedicated, passionate, and skilled professionals to become part of our collaborative team within the Critical Care division at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
This role is a replacement position, and the successful candidate will join a team of 10 Consultant Intensivists, focusing on providing exceptional care within the Critical Care Unit. The post-holder will be involved in a 1:10 on-call rota for critical care services. For those without a CCT in anaesthesia, we are committed to creating a tailored job plan that aligns with your expertise. We welcome applications for flexible or part-time arrangements.

Main Responsibilities
The primary duties of the post-holder will be at the Colchester General Hospital, with occasional requirements to support other areas within the Trust.
The key responsibilities include:
- Participating in the dedicated on-call rota for the Critical Care Unit alongside fellow colleagues
- Providing daytime coverage for Critical Care and supporting the Outreach service
- Exhibiting a special interest in Critical Care Medicine
- Flexibly covering theatre sessions and allied specialties, with efforts made to accommodate those without a CCT in Anaesthesia
- Actively supervising and managing junior medical staff, including formal teaching and clinical audits
- Engaging in the appraisal and assessment of junior medical staff and undergraduates, along with conducting clinical audits as directed by the Unit Training Director
- Providing training and education to staff across various medical disciplines, nursing, and support teams as necessary
- Fully participating in the clinical incident reporting system

Job Responsibilities
The post-holder will:
- Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a Consultant-led service that meets the highest standards of care
- Work with a multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Establish and maintain effective working practices
- Promote strong collaborative relationships with colleagues, other departments, and primary care
- Provide educational and clinical support to junior medical staff, nursing staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary team
- Ensure staff have access to relevant information to assess clinical performance and establish meaningful benchmarks
- Implement a robust process for reviewing service quality, identifying causes of success and areas for improvement
- Serve as a professional role model, embodying the corporate values and behaviors expected by the organization
- Ensure junior doctors' training aligns with College requirements
- Participate in the appraisal of medical staff in accordance with Trust policies
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications:
- CCT/CCST or eligibility for the Specialist Register in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia (or Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine) within six months of the interview date
- Advanced Training in Intensive Care Medicine as defined by FICM or equivalent
- Expertise in providing clinical opinions for a range of emergency and elective patients within the ICM specialty
- Confidence in managing and stabilizing children requiring intensive care
- Ability to lead and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
- Commitment to teaching undergraduates, postgraduates, nursing staff, and other allied health professionals
- Understanding of NHS management structures and responsibilities associated with the consultant role
- Willingness to work the required hours and provide on-call cover as needed
Desirable Qualifications:
- Further qualifications in Intensive Care Medicine, such as EDIC
- Experience in training outside the regional training scheme, either internationally or within the UK
- Evidence of peer-reviewed work
- Participation in 'Training the Trainers' courses
- Instructor qualifications in ALS/APLS or ATLS
- Presentation of personal work at national or international professional meetings
- Higher degrees (MD, PhD)
- Formal management training
