Consultant in Intensive Care

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Consultant in Intensive Care to join our dynamic team at Colchester Hospital, part of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointed post-holder will participate in the 1:10 out of hour's on-call rota for critical care and will have dedicated sessions on the Critical Care Unit. The post holder will also participate in the supervision and management of junior medical staff, including formal teaching programmes and clinical audits.

The successful candidate will have a CCT/CCST or entry onto the Specialist Register for ICM and Anaesthesia (or Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine) or within 6 months of interview date. They will also have Advanced Training in Intensive Care Medicine as defined by FICM or equivalent.

The post offers a Gold Welcome Package, including a relocation package of £7000, additional £20,000 lump sum plus 1.5 additional 'SPA' time for the first 24 months.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in the dedicated CCU on-call rota with other colleagues
  • Provide day time cover for Critical Care and support the Outreach service
  • Have a special interest in Critical Care Medicine
  • Work flexibly to cover theatre sessions/allied specialties
  • Take an active part in the supervision and management of junior medical staff, including formal teaching programmes and clinical audits
  • Participate in appraisal and assessment of junior medical staff and undergraduates, and performance of clinical audit as delegated by the Unit Training Director
  • To teach and train staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate
  • To participate fully in the clinical incident reporting system
Person Specification
  • CCT/CCST or entry onto the Specialist Register for ICM and Anaesthesia (or Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine) or within 6 months of interview date.
  • Advanced Training in Intensive Care Medicine as defined by FICM or equivalent.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems with both emergency and elective patients within the ICM specialty
  • Confidence in the initial management and stabilisation of children requiring intensive care
  • Ability to lead and work as part of multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively and be involved in the organisation of the department
  • Evidence of ability and commitment to teach undergraduates, postgraduates, nursing staff and other AHP.
  • Understanding of NHS management structure to undertake the role of consultant and all its implied responsibility for clinical management tasks
  • Ability and willingness to work hours of the job and provide out of hours cover on-call with any reasonable adjustment to take account of any local requirements.
  • Further qualification in ICM, eg EDIC
  • A period of training in centre outside the regional training scheme either abroad or in the UK
  • Evidence of work submitted for peer review
  • Evidence of participation at 'Training the Trainers Course'
  • ALS/APLS or ATLS Instructor
  • Evidence of presentation of personal work at national/international professional society meetings
  • Evidence of formal management training
