We are excited to announce a vacancy within our Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Colchester Hospital. We are seeking a dedicated Obstetric Consultant with a focus on High-Risk Obstetrics and Antenatal Care. The selected candidate will play a crucial role in managing the care of women facing complex and high-risk pregnancies, collaborating closely with the multi-disciplinary team.

This position is newly established, offering the chance to enhance the specialist obstetric services based on the applicant's interests, which may include clinics such as VBAC, Care Outside of Guidance, and support for existing specialized services.

To be eligible, candidates must have completed CCT or an equivalent qualification (CESR) and be registered on the Specialist Register.

Main Responsibilities

CLINICAL DUTIES

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  1. Overseeing the operational efficiency of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.
  2. Establishing standards, procedures, and effective systems to ensure safe, high-quality patient care from entry to discharge.
  3. Providing mentorship to junior medical staff through both formal and informal educational opportunities.
  4. Contributing to educational initiatives for junior medical personnel, including formal teaching and clinical audits tailored to the Unit's needs.
  5. Training and supporting staff across various medical disciplines, nursing, and support roles as necessary.
  6. Maintaining an updated job plan and personal development plan.
  7. Engaging in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in accordance with RCOG guidelines.
  8. Advising General Practitioners on patient suitability for hospital admission.

Job Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES

The post-holder will:

  1. Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a Consultant-led service that meets the highest standards of care.
  2. Work alongside the multi-professional team to develop clinical pathways and guidelines.
  3. Foster effective working relationships with wards, out-patients, and the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department.
  4. Encourage collaboration and strong connections with colleagues, other departments, and primary care.
  5. Provide educational and clinical support, as well as leadership to junior medical staff, nursing staff, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  6. Ensure that staff have access to relevant information to assess clinical performance and establish meaningful benchmarks.
  7. Implement a robust process for evaluating service quality, identifying successes and areas for improvement to maintain high standards.
  8. Exemplify professional leadership that aligns with the organization's corporate values and behaviors, ensuring these are understood and demonstrated by the medical workforce.
  9. Ensure that junior doctors' training adheres to College requirements.
  10. Participate in the appraisal process for medical staff in accordance with the Trust's policies.
  11. Provide mentoring to new and existing consultant staff within the Trust.
Person Specification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • MRCOG or equivalent qualification.
  • Training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT.
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or within six months of CCT date at interview.
  • ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice.
  • Demonstrated clinical skills and experience in managing labor and high-risk antenatal care.
  • MOET/ALSO or equivalent training.
  • PROMPT trained and faculty member.
  • ATSMs in High-Risk Pregnancy, Maternal Medicine, Labour Ward Lead, Fetal Medicine.
  • Training in pre-term surveillance or perinatal mental health, or other ATSM compatible with a Consultant Obstetrician role.
  • Extensive experience in high-risk pregnancy and antenatal care.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, necessitating a Disclosure submission to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any prior criminal convictions.
