Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Microbiology Consultant to join our esteemed Microbiology department at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will be an integral part of a dedicated team delivering diagnostic services across a diverse array of specialties, including trauma and orthopaedics, cardiology, and colorectal surgery, as well as supporting General Practitioners and primary care providers throughout the region.

In addition to this role, we are open to considering candidates for Clinical Lead and Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC) positions based on their experience and preferences.

The Microbiology laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technology, thanks to significant capital investment from the Trust. This includes advanced mass spectrometry and automated systems for identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of four Consultant Microbiologists, participating in a 1 in 5 on-call rotation for Infection Prevention and Control (Band A) and a joint second on-call for Microbiology with a partner NHS Foundation Trust. A registrar will provide first on-call support, subject to ongoing evaluation. Our team also includes two Trust Grade Microbiology Doctors.

The role involves engaging in a diverse clinical microbiology workload, which encompasses:

  • Providing expert advice on test interpretation
  • Authorizing laboratory results
  • Collaborating with clinical teams during patient reviews
  • Conducting clinical ward rounds
  • Offering guidance on appropriate antimicrobial therapies and infection control measures

Applicants must have completed higher specialist training in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and be registered on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or an equivalent qualification by the time of the interview.

Candidate Profile

Essential Experience:

  • Clinical training and experience in the relevant specialty, equivalent to that required for entry to the UK Certificate of Completed Training (CCT) in Microbiology
  • Demonstrated high standards of clinical skill and expertise in clinical microbiology
  • Experience in Clinical Governance

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in infection prevention and control
  • Experience in antibiotic stewardship

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Full registration on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register (either Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) or Specialist Registrars may apply if within six months of CCT at the time of the Advisory Appointment Committee
