Job Overview
The role involves providing spiritual guidance and pastoral support to individuals in custody and staff members, adhering to the principles of the Anglican faith while also being sensitive to diverse beliefs. The successful candidate will ensure that the spiritual needs of all individuals, regardless of their faith or lack thereof, are met effectively.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a Faith/Belief advisor, offering counsel, pastoral care, and spiritual support to inmates, staff, and their families as needed.
  • Organize and facilitate worship, meditation, and study sessions, ensuring a welcoming environment for all participants.
  • Collaborate in the formulation of local policies and practices that enhance spiritual care.
  • Provide mentorship and support to fellow chaplains and volunteers, particularly in times of crisis.
  • Ensure the availability of chaplaincy services at all times, fostering a supportive atmosphere.
  • Lead and plan various worship and faith-specific gatherings.
  • Offer pastoral care to inmates, assisting in resolving crises when necessary.
  • Support and nurture chaplaincy volunteers in their roles.
  • Coordinate with contractors and volunteers to facilitate religious services.
  • Work alongside other chaplains and the Managing Chaplain to maintain and enhance worship facilities.
  • Inform the prison community about significant religious events and organize support for these occasions.
  • Acquire and distribute religious literature and materials as needed.
  • Contribute to training initiatives for staff and volunteers.
  • Participate in the organization and delivery of Faith Awareness Training for personnel.
  • Prioritize personal spiritual health and development through dedicated time for prayer and reflection.
  • Provide necessary support to the establishment in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
  • Actively engage in the Assessment, Care in Custody, and Teamwork (ACCT) process.
  • Attend relevant meetings and contribute actively as a team member or leader.
  • Build connections with local faith communities and agencies to explore mentoring opportunities for released individuals.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at improving service delivery and achieving set targets, ensuring accurate administration and data collection.
  • Conduct Ministerial Reviews within the faith community as appropriate.
  • Assist in community initiatives funded by HMPPS as agreed.

Essential Qualifications
  • Candidates must meet the faith/belief eligibility criteria as outlined in the Group Profile.
  • Proficiency in English or Welsh (where applicable) is required for all spoken aspects of the role.

Technical Requirements
  • Formal endorsement from the Anglican Bishop to Prisons is required.
  • Candidates must have a recognized qualification in theology or religious studies, typically involving at least three years of part-time study.
  • Relevant practical experience in delivering worship and pastoral care is essential, with a minimum of one year of experience post-training.

Working Hours
The position entails a 37-hour work week. The candidate must be capable of fulfilling all spoken aspects of the role confidently in English or Welsh (when specified).
