Overview

As the Public Relations Lead, you will be responsible for crafting and executing a media engagement strategy that effectively promotes the organization's policies and initiatives while safeguarding its interests across various regions and business sectors. This role is integral to ensuring alignment with the national communications framework.

About the Position

We are thrilled to offer a pivotal opportunity within one of the busiest regional press teams. The ideal candidate will be positioned in our Eastern region, showcasing the organization’s efforts to enhance railway services for both passengers and freight, while also amplifying safety initiatives and generating compelling content to assist travelers.

This dynamic region encompasses some of the most significant rail corridors, including:

  • The East Coast main line extending from Kings Cross to the Scottish border,
  • The Midland Main Line from St. Pancras to Sheffield, passing through Nottingham, Leicester, and Derby,
  • Key railway routes across the North East, including all TransPennine connections.

We seek an exceptional communicator with a robust background in media relations and social media, who thrives in collaborative environments and is passionate about storytelling.

The successful candidate will bring innovative ideas for showcasing our personnel and their groundbreaking work, possessing the insight to determine the optimal timing and method for sharing these narratives.

In challenging situations, they will adeptly manage the organization’s reputation, counter misinformation, and handle narratives that may take a negative turn.

Strong relationships with broadcast and online newsrooms are essential, along with proficient filming and editing skills to create content for press releases and social media platforms.

We require someone with outstanding journalist connections, a keen sense for newsworthy stories, and the ability to operate effectively under pressure to deliver clear and accessible information to journalists and the public during disruptions.

We encourage exploration and engagement—capturing stories through behind-the-scenes access to major projects. This role involves regular travel and site visits within the Eastern region, complemented by a blend of home and office work.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Participating in a comprehensive, 24/7 press desk service for the organization, including on-call duties for after-hours media inquiries.
  2. Executing national media campaigns aligned with corporate priorities and objectives.
  3. Effectively managing processes, quality standards, and operational systems for regional media coordination and information exchange.
  4. Implementing strategies that facilitate the achievement of objectives outlined in the national media and communications plans.
  5. Overseeing the production of press releases, briefing sessions, media visits, and broadcast arrangements as necessary, while monitoring media commentary and preparing appropriate responses to clarify any misconceptions.
  6. Monitoring social media platforms and providing timely and accurate responses as needed.
  7. Keeping senior media relations personnel informed of significant media inquiries or activities.
  8. Evaluating the effectiveness of press coverage and taking corrective measures when necessary.
  9. Maintaining regular communication with editors and senior journalists to ensure they are informed about our role, policies, and key stories.
  10. Executing the major incident communications plan as required.
