Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join our team at Biffa, a leading waste management company in the UK. As an Operations Manager, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our depot, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of customer service against pre-defined business KPIs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the traffic dispatcher team, ensuring they have the necessary resources and support to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Review and analyze Depot KPIs, including service, safety, and profitability, to identify areas for improvement and implement changes as needed.
  • Operate the day-to-day shift operations at the depot, including driver supervision and vehicle availability, to ensure seamless customer service delivery.
  • Manage, motivate, train, and develop the team as required, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles effectively.
  • Deal effectively with underperformance, implementing disciplinary procedures as appropriate, and manage absence and conduct return-to-work interviews.
  • Manage the planning process for mobilization of new work and tactical re-routes, ensuring optimal resource allocation and customer service delivery.
  • Contribute to ongoing cost control, actively seeking to improve efficiency, reduce operating costs, increase margin, and meet budget targets set.
  • Ensure all aspects of Health & Safety are adhered to, including H&S induction and training, operating procedures, near miss reporting, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with internal and external customers, deputizing for the Depot Manager as required.

Requirements:

  • Experience as a Traffic Manager or similar role in the Services or Logistics industry.
  • People and Health & Safety management experience in a unionized environment.
  • Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPIs.
  • Demonstrable experience of successful resource management and cost control.
  • Experience with route planning software such as Route Monkey, DPS (LogiX), etc.
  • Transport legislation knowledge.
  • Local geographical knowledge.
  • Good transport and logistics knowledge.
  • Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of working within a time-critical service environment.
