Specialist Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Specialist Teaching Assistant to join our team at a reputable secondary school in Ripon, North Yorkshire. As a Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special educational needs, particularly in literacy development.

About the Role
  • Provide targeted literacy support to students with SEN, working 1:1 or in small groups to develop reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • Assist students in accessing the full curriculum by embedding and developing literacy skills, ensuring they can engage with all subjects effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with the English Department and Inclusion team to design and implement personalized learning plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Create and adapt learning materials that support literacy development and cater to the diverse needs of SEN students.
  • Deliver and support literacy programs such as Ruth Miskin or Phonics, using these approaches to improve student attainment and engagement.
  • Track and assess student progress in literacy, providing regular feedback to teachers, the Inclusion team, and parents to inform future planning.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in literacy education and SEN support.
Requirements
  • Relevant qualifications in Literacy or Special Educational Needs (e.g., Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Literacy Specialist courses).
  • Proven experience working with SEN students, particularly in literacy support, within a secondary school setting.
  • Familiarity with literacy intervention programs such as Ruth Miskin or Phonics is desirable.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with teaching staff, the Inclusion team, and other professionals to create a supportive and effective learning environment.
  • A creative and energetic approach to developing and delivering literacy programs that engage and inspire students.
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS registered to the update service or be happy to apply for a new one.
