Position Overview

JOB TITLE: Biomedical Associate Specialist

BAND: AfC Band 4

BASE: The primary location will be within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, with necessary travel between various hospital sites.

HOURS: per week

REPORTS TO: Advanced Specialist/Team Leader Biomedical Scientist

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Deputy Service Manager

Key Responsibilities

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Operations across all three hospital locations; Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General, and Glenfield Hospital.

WORKING SCHEDULE: Shift patterns covering 24/7 operations. This role presents an exciting opportunity for individuals with a Foundation degree or equivalent, aspiring to work as bi-disciplinary Biomedical Associate Specialists in the Blood Sciences Department. Comprehensive training will be provided in utilizing advanced automated analyzers for blood sample processing.

Candidates possessing relevant hospital laboratory experience and meeting the criteria for training as a Biomedical Associate Specialist may be considered.

You will be a motivated team player capable of prioritizing tasks and working independently with minimal oversight. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with a flexible approach and the ability to perform accurately and efficiently under pressure. The role requires adaptability to work across any of the hospital sites at any time within a 24/7 framework.

Job Responsibilities

Technical/Scientific Duties: Conduct routine and non-routine tests or activities as designated by individual laboratories, up to but not including the point of authorization, with the exception of auto-authorized procedures. Adhere to standard operating procedures. Utilize scientific knowledge to identify incorrect results and take corrective actions. Perform laboratory tests that require a high level of manual dexterity.

Equipment Oversight: Responsible for monitoring and executing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of centrifuges, automated analyzers, and other laboratory equipment, ensuring that logs are accurately maintained by all staff. Verify the safety and functionality of all equipment, perform basic troubleshooting, and report any malfunctions to Biomedical Scientist staff.

Inventory Management: Ensure adequate supplies of reagents and materials for the daily operations of the laboratory. Maintain inventory control records and order additional stock as necessary. Collaborate with senior staff and Pathology stores personnel to confirm that deliveries are accurate and timely.

Information Technology: Ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures for your work area are current and displayed appropriately. Assist in proposing, developing, and implementing new procedures. Utilize word processing and spreadsheet software to create draft SOPs, audit reports, and laboratory data.

Planning and Organization: Plan and manage your workload effectively and may be required to delegate tasks to Biomedical assistants.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Participate in the training of new biomedical assistants and associate practitioners. Supervise biomedical assistants and less experienced staff, assigning tasks and providing training as needed.
